ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

The good news was, Farmington resident DONNA MARTIN so impressed those putting

together the itinerary for this year's Lilith Fair that even though her press

package arrived after the deadline for local entries, Martin was nevertheless

selected to appear with Lilith when it pulled into Hartford last weekend. Her

newest album, called Pioneers , was the sound organizers were looking for.

The bad news was, most Lilith-goers missed her show on the acoustic stage last

Saturday afternoon. Although tickets and promotions gave a 4:30 starting time,

gates to the venue opened at 2 pm, and Martin's performance was at 2:30 pm.

You do the math...

Lilith was not without its surprises and unexpected events, either. ME'SHELL

NDEGEOCELLO was a last minute addition to the bill, replacing the Fugees'

LAURYN HILL for a Mainstage performance. Also added at the last minute was

SUZANNE VEGA, to open the Mainstage performances. About 30 minutes into her

set, however, Ndegeocello collapsed onstage. At first rumored to be a seizure

set off by the flash from an overzealous fan's camera, a Meadows

representative said Monday afternoon that the musician had instead suffered

from a temporary heat exhaustion. Fortunately by Sunday, Ndegeocello was back

in swing.

And two weeks ago, the rumor was Sarah McLachlan had a little McLachlan bun in

the oven. When she did not perform for the July 5 concert, a first -- and

hopefully once-only occurrence -- for Lilith, the rumor began. Turns out

McLachlan had been battling stomach pains all day and was unable to perform...

due to food poisoning.

And they said an all-female touring festival wouldn't have any excitement!

INDIGO SWING will be opening for the BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA at The Globe in

Norwalk next Wednesday night.

Borders Books Music Cafe in Danbury will host ANNIE RAPID this weekend, in the

store's cafe Saturday night from 8-10. Rapid has performed at more than 120

colleges and universities across the country, and is finally receiving

consistent airplay thanks to her new album, Roses and Ash .

With the recent purchase of the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford by SFX

Broadcasting, the theatre's schedule seems to have become busier than ever. In

addition to the THIRD EYE BLIND show this weekend, recent additions to the

Oakdale schedule include guitarists BUDDY GUY and JONNY LANG on the 31st; and

MATCHBOX 20 on August 11, with Soul Asylum and Semisonic opening. Still

available are tickets for the BIG BAD VOODOO DADDY show tonight (7:30, tickets

are just $17.50; this is the band from the movie Swingers ), and the August 6

CULTURE CLUB, HOWARD JONES and HUMAN LEAGUE 80s Lovefest.

The BUDDY GUY-JONNY LANG show just mentioned that will be in Wallingford on

July 31 will be in Danbury the following night. Ives Concert Park will be

hosting its annual BLUES FESTIVAL, on Saturday, August 1, beginning at 6 pm.

As in Wallingford, SUSAN TEDESCHI will play the opening set. Tickets are

available through TicketMaster or the Ives box office; call 837-9226. Gold

Circle tickets for the Danbury show are $50, the remaining reserved seats are

$35. Lawn seats are $20, and children are $5 for lawn seats.

Is lawn seat an oxymoron, do you suppose? Until next week, I'll be seeing

you... on the road.
