ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

At the Lilith Fair on July 11 in Hartford, SARAH McLACHLAN continued a

tradition that began with last year's traveling festival. The fair donates $1

from each ticket sold prior to the beginning of each concert to a local

charity. On Saturday afternoon, McLachlan presented a check for $13,600 to

representatives from Hartford Interval House, including Cecile Enrico, the

executive director of HIH.

"We're always looking for ways to raise money, so to have something like this

find us, well, we're certainly very pleased. We feel honored to have been

selected by Lilith," Ms Enrico said last week. "We feel very privileged"

Interval House is the largest domestic violence program in the stage. Its

geographic area (21 towns) is the largest area of coverage by one program in

Connecticut. HIH provides services to women and children in emergencies, and

also has programming for preventative measures. Volunteers offer information

and referrals, community education to various groups (church, women, civic

organizations, etc), and also go into college and high schools with date

violence programs, and elementary and preschools with a puppet show geared to

these age levels.

"Our hope," Ms Enrico said, "is that this is a prevention piece. If we get to

them young enough and they become aware of behavior that is unacceptable, we

hope this will stay with them as they get older and they will know how to deal

with a situation."

A sad comment on today's society, even in Connecticut: Hartford House and its

chapters (West Hartford and Manchester) receives 800 calls a month from women

in trouble. The court advocates for HIH handle 40 cases each month in West

Hartford, 170 cases a month in Manchester, and between 200 and 300 cases in

Hartford. These numbers represent cases where there has been an arrest.

Additional information on Hartford House specifically can call 860/246-9149.

The House also has two hotlines, both of which are in operation 24 hours a

day. In the Hartford area, call 860/527-0550. Statewide, call toll-free

888/774-2900. The statewide number will automatically direct callers to their

local domestic violence shelter; in Newtown, for instance, calls will go

directly to the Danbury Women's Center. Calls to both numbers are completely

confidential.

Returning to Lilith Fair news and images, the following photo is of NATALIE

MERCHANT during her performance July 11 in Hartford. Merchant's set was a

selection of work predominately from her days since going solo from 10,000

MANIACS. Songs like "Jealousy" and "Wonder" were widely applauded and sung

along to, while new material from the just-released Ophelia received the same

response SARAH McLACHLAN had last year when she started performing material

off her then-new album, Surfacing . The audience was excited to hear new music

from Merchant -- a brilliant performer -- but it was unfamiliar to most and so

was more politely received. McLachlan's material this summer, on the other

hand, is more familiar to fans.

Toad's Place has had to postpone, yet again, the TUBES show scheduled for

August 7 (which was already rescheduled from June) to August 21. Not sure for

the reason behind the move, but the club promises this show will happen, and

it won't be switched again. Tickets (which are still available, for $15 at the

door) from either of the previously planned dates will be honored on the 21st.

The MIGHTY PURPLE show next week, on July 30, will be recorded for use on a

future live CD. Tickets are still available. Opening performances will be by

Paradise Vendors, Underpass and Chimerical Grooves. The show is open to all

ages; tickets are $10.

Jumping into the swing craze, the club will host a Swing Night next month. On

August 18, EIGHT TO THE BAR will be performing, with dance instruction

available all night. Tickets for this show are also $10. In September, the

mood will shift to Irish music, when THE YOUNG DUBLINERS headline and THE

REILLY CLAN opens on the 10th.

Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
