ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS

On Monday, August 3, MIND TYDES will be playing the opening set when RATT

performs at Tuxedo Junction in Danbury. Mind Tydes has been playing around the

state off and on since February 1997, when the band won the radio 104 First

Annual Modern Rock Wars contest. Aside from the show at Riverfest the guys

from Newtown played in last summer as part of their prize package from the

Hartford-based radio 104, this may be one of the biggest opportunities for the

band to date.

It's certainly close to home for family and friends of the guys in the band

(Grady McAuliffe, Fred Dotson, Adam Solinas and Greg McWilliam). The show

starts at 8 pm, and will also include a set by Matt's Altar. Tickets are

$15.50 in advance, or $17 at the door.

On August 7, the experimental electronic duo BURNKIT will be performing in the

gallery space at 11 Library Place in Danbury. The space is adjacent to Gallery

13, which will be hosting the opening reception for its newest show, "Nothing

to Wear," during the same hours, 7-10 pm. Admission is free.

Next weekend, the Newtown-based band UNCLE WILL'S DOGS will continue the

CityCenter Summertime Festival of Events over in Danbury. Free concerts are

presented by the organization every Thursday through Sunday during the summer.

Family-oriented events are planned for each Thursday at 6:30 pm; Friday and

Saturday evenings begin at 7:30. On August 8, Uncle Will's Dogs will bring its

Grateful Dead sound to the bandshell at CityCenter Green, which is encircled

by Ives Street and Patriot Drive.

As mentioned earlier, admission to all CityCenter events is free. Picnics are

welcome (but please remember to clean up after yourself!). Bring lawn chairs

or blankets for seating. Parking is available nearby in Patriot Garage, or if

you are one of the lucky ones who can find one of the parking spaces along

Ives Street open.

The festival schedule includes music (and even a few theatre performances) of

all types, from rock and blues to swing/Big Band and even an all-day

multi-cultural Christian faith celebration later this month, as well as the

return of the Gasball Festival on August 22. The concerts and events are

always listed in the concert section of the "Enjoy" calendar page (under the

heading "CityCenter Danbury Green..."), or you can call the CityCenter

organization for a full copy of the summer schedule at 792-1711.

Also next weekend the second festival of the summer will be presented by

Woodbury Ski Area. The 28th Annual Reggae Fest will be Sunday, August 9,

beginning at 11 am. Featured performers will be ALPHA BLONDY, MAJEK FASHEK &

THE PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE, BABBA SETH, and others. Tickets are $20 in

advance, or $30 at the gate. Parking is free, and coolers are allowed. Bring

chairs/blankets for seating. The ski/skate area is on Route 47 in Woodbury;

telephone 263-2203.

A date change for the Southern Rock Jam '98 at the Meadows Music Theatre in

Hartford (with CHARLIE DANIELS BAND, MARSHALL TUCKER BAND and MOLLY HATCHET).

The show will now be performed Tuesday, July 18 -- that's one day earlier than

had been previously announced. Tickets with the July 19 date will be honored,

of course. Tickets are also still available for the show. SHANIA TWAIN will

now be performing at the venue on the 19th (tickets went on sale July 25).

In addition, the August 22 concert by AEROSMITH scheduled at the Meadows has

been postponed. Drummer Joey Kramer was injured when his Ferrari caught fire a

few weeks ago, causing the band to postpone the first 13 dates of its tour.

Hold on to your tickets; the Meadows will reschedule and honor all tickets

already purchased.

Pet Peeve of the Week: Movies that run commercials with a popular song playing

in the background, but do not include that song in the released soundtrack.

The latest culprit? Disturbing Behavior . Radio and TV ads continue to play

HARVEY DANGER'S paranoia song ("Flagpole Sitta"), which seems to fit this

movie very well, but when the soundtrack showed up in the office this week,

the Harvey Danger song was nowhere to be seen (or heard). Until next week,

I'll be seeing you... on the road, searching for Harvey Danger.

Questions and comments concerning "On The Road" (or anything music related)

should be sent to Shannon Hicks, c/o Bee Publishing Co., 5 Church Hill Road,

Newtown 06470, or shannon @thebee.com. Include a phone number for

confirmation, please . If you don't have a stamp or a piece of paper or a

writing utensil that works, give me a call! Phone number at the office is

426-3141. Shows listed on the calendar at club locations are for ages 21 and

over unless specified.
