Newtown High School’s boys’ indoor track and field team, not unlike any other, will need points to come from a wide variety of sources in order to be competitive in conference and state championship meets.

Good news for the Nighthawks: “I think our strength is really going to be our depth — they’re strong, they’re determined,” Newtown Coach Becky Osborne commented.

“Our goal is always to win,” said Osborne, adding that whether or not that is attainable hinges on more than what her team does, but no matter where the Hawks finish, she anticipates them putting in a solid effort. “It really depends on the rest of the league. We’re training hard and doing the best we can, and hopefully that best will get us places.”

Newtown was fifth in the South-West Conference championships, won by Weston, last winter, and the Nighthawks came in 16th in the Class LL state meet. New Milford, Immaculate of Danbury, Weston, and Masuk of Monroe are traditionally among the better teams in the SWC, Osborne notes.

Captains are Thomas Hartley (hurdles and sprints), Bob Carroll (throws), Jon Nahmias (hurdles and sprints), and Aiden Jaskinski (pole vault and high jump).

Other key team members are Tristan Andrew, who is hard at work with decathlon training; Nick Jacobs (distance); Evan Hildrenbrand (distance); Grant Baker (throws); Miles Martiska (jumps); Griffin Estes (jumps); Ben Albee (sprints); Justin Halmose (distance); and Isaac Silverman (sprints).

With about 20 sophomores, the roster has 60-plus team members.

“That really says a lot about our program and how excited people were last year and having people come back and getting their friends to join them,” Osborne said.

After participating in qualifying and invitational meets during the winter, the postseason gets underway with the SWC championships on Saturday, February 2, at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, beginning at 5 pm.
