DUI Arrest

Police report that after investigating a one-car accident on Plumtrees Road about 10:30 pm March 16, they charged Howard J. Wolowitz, 61, of 16 Main Street with driving under the influence, possession of marijuana, and failure to drive to the right. Wolowitz had failed field sobriety testing, police said.

Police released Wolowitz on $100 bail for an April 1 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

High School Incident

Police charged a Newtown High School student with two offenses about 8 am March 17. Police said they arrested Hugo Ortero, 17, of 102 Alpine Drive on charges of breach of peace and second degree threatening.

Police said they arrested Ortero after he was involved in a minor physical altercation with another student. Ortero allegedly was verbally abusive and also made a threatening gesture toward police, according to police.

Following arrest processing, police released Ortero into the custody of a parent for a March 30 court appearance.

Evading Responsibility

At about 7:15 pm March 15, someone drove into a vehicle that was parked in the parking lot at Mona Lisa Restaurant at 160 South Main Street, damaging the parked vehicle, according to police. The offender then drove away from the scene. Police are investigating.

Five Charges

On the morning of March 17, police arrested a local man on a warrant, lodging five charges against him.

Police charged Brian Brown, 31, of 25 Algonquin Trail with driving under the influence, reckless driving, possession of narcotics (heroin), possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle (machete).

The five charges stem from a motor vehicle accident last December, police said.

In that accident, which occurred about 6 pm December 8, Brown was driving a 1988 Chevrolet Celebrity southward near 28 Glen Road, when Brown lost control of the auto, crossed the road’s centerline, entered the northbound lane and then struck a masonry wall along the northbound road shoulder, police said. Brown received serious head and facial injuries in the December 8 accident and was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment, according to police.

Police said Brown is scheduled to appear in court to answer the five charges on March 30.

 

Four Violations

Police said that at about 1:28 am March 19, they received a report from a motorist that another motorist was driving erratically on South Main Street, so they went to investigate.

Police said they stopped motorist Michael McLaughlin, 46, of Southbury on Wasserman Way to investigate. Police then charged McLaughlin with misuse of marker plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving while under suspension, and driving without automotive insurance.

After processing his arrest, police released McLaughlin on a promise to appear March 31 in Danbury Superior Court.

Subaru Vs Tanker

Police investigated at an accident that occurred about 2:15 pm March 15 at the intersection of Schoolhouse Hill Road and Edmond Road, which is a private road.

The intersection crash involved motorist Jacqueline Ratzing, 17, of 13 Joan Drive, who had been driving a 2005 Subaru Impreza northward on Edmond Road, and motorist Francisco Saez, 53, of Stratford, who had been driving a 2005 Freightliner tanker truck westward on Schoolhouse Hill Road, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Ratzing a written warning for failure to grant the right of way from a private road. Police gave Saez a written warning for failure to wear a seat belt.

    

Lakeview Terrace

Police report that a two-car accident occurred on the afternoon of March 12 on Lakeview Terrace, the Cedarhurst section of Sandy Hook.

Motorist Tom Cheung, 49, of 114 Lakeview Terrace, who was driving a 2000 Nissan X-Terra sport-utility vehicle, was in his driveway and was starting to make a left turn onto Lakeview Terrace, when the Nissan collided with an eastbound 2000 Dodge pickup truck driven by Lance Walker, 26, of 190 Lakeview Terrace, police report. There were no injuries or enforcement actions.

 

Botsford Hill Road

At about 1 pm March 18, motorist Colleen Schaedler, 20, of Southbury was stopped for driving too fast on Botsford Hill Road, police said.

Police said that after stopping the vehicle, they searched it and found various drug paraphernalia inside.

Police charged Schaedler with traveling too fast, driving while under suspension, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Police released her on a promise to appear in court on April 7.

Hattertown Road

Police said that motorist Kevin Comer, 42, of Shelton, who was driving a 1993 Saturn SL-2 sedan westward near 12 Hattertown Road about 8:45 am March 22, encountered a deer that had run onto the road and then collided with it. Comer was not injured in the mishap, police said.

Queen Street MVA

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the Newtown Middle School driveway at 12 Queen Street about 2:11 pm March 22.

Motorist Lydia Saravis, 45, of 15 Winding Brook Road, who was driving a 2002 Acura MDX sport-utility vehicle, was exiting the school driveway when she collided with motorist Barbara Johnson, 70, of 5 Hawleyville Road, who was driving a 2003 Buick LeSabre on Queen Street, police said.

Saravis reported shoulder pain, but refused medical attention, police said. Police issued Saravis an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

Sheetrock Dumped

Police report that someone dumped a large amount of sheetrock onto Bancroft Road in the Riverside section sometime during the night of March 22-23. The town cleared away the mess. Police ask anyone with information on the illegal dumping to contact them at 426-5841.

Raccoon

Motorist Dianna Desances, 20, of Bridgeport was driving a 1994 Mitsubishi Galant westward on Route 34 about 5:30 am March 19, when she encountered a raccoon on the road, police said.

Desances swerved to avoid the animal, but struck a utility pole, police said. Ambulance staffers transported her to Danbury Hospital for treatment of neck and back injuries. Sandy Hook firefighters were dispatched to the accident. Police issued Desances a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Huntingtown Theft

Sometime between 8 pm March 21 and 7:30 am March 22, someone stole a new mailbox from the roadside in front of 109 Huntingtown Road, police report.

The mailbox did not contain any mail. Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information on it to contact them at 270-8888.
