Elementary Wrestling Team Wins Third Straight Championship

Wrestlers in grades K-5 from Newtown, Danbury, Trumbull, New Milford, Ridgefield, Pomperaug, Brookfield, Redding, New Fairfield, Bethel, and Stamford competed at the Danbury Police Activities League facility in the Western Connecticut League Elementary Championship on January 28.

For the third year in a row, the Newtown elementary team brought home the first place championship trophy. Newtown dominated with 40 out of a possible 48 points. Danbury was second with 30 points.

First place finishers included Fisher Stites, Kenna Gioffre, Brighton Karvoski, Max Melitsky, Jake Maddox, Antonio Arguello, Marco D'Amico, Danny Accomando,  Liam McGovern, and Kieran Fierary.

Coming in second were Tyler Telesca, Marc Maurath, Shaun Daoust, Jason Benson, and Kyle Segetti. Taking home the third place medals were Brendan McAnaspie, Anderson Occhipini, William Rabadi, Sawyer Peduto, Kieran Regan, Pete Eppers, Steven Accomando, Cole Praissman, and Chase McInerney. Finishing in fourth place were Leo Tibbets, Jack Cotter, Andrew Moran, Max Praissman, Jakob Wenis, Alex Roman, and Thomas Morgan.

The following day, at Ridgefield High School, the Newtown wrestlers in grades 6-8 took home fourth place among the 11 teams participating in the Western Connecticut League Middle School Championship. The team finished strongly, just one point shy of third place.

Taking home first place trophies were Luca Manfredi and Jack Wendel. Adam Wright, Steven Leuci, and Carlos Loor finished in second place, and Ben Watson finished third in his eight-man bracket. Watson had one of the most exciting matches of the day with a back and forth close win over Trumbull's Breon Phifer. Manfredi dominated his division to be named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.
