EMT Course At NHS

Jules Triber, assistant principal, Mike Agius, and Debby Aubin of the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance are organizing an EMT course for juniors and seniors.

The course follows national standards and fulfills state requirements for certification of Emergency Medical Technicians. It would be offered to upperclassmen at the high school for credit.

The course will expose students to a different aspect of medical care not on television, but in person. As a part of the 130-hour course, students will be required to observe and participate in patient care at Danbury Hospital. Participants will observe what happens to patients who are transported to the hospital and will help care for them. The opportunity for “ride alongs” on ambulance calls will be offered to those interested.

CPR training is a pre-requisite to taking the class and will be offered to those interested at the ambulance garage. The proposed course will also be offered to anyone wishing to volunteer for the ambulance.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps course will start on May 22. The cost of the course is $325 with an additional $35 for state registry. For additional information, call Debby Aubin at 426-6874. Interested high school students should contact Peg Ragaini or Jane McEvoy in the Career Center or call 426-1915 by May 11.
