Field Hockey Squad Makes Trip To Enfield Memorable, Advances To State Semis

Not much separated the Newtown and Enfield high school field hockey teams in the Class L field hockey rankings. But it took a 130-mile round trip effort by the fifth-seeded Newtown Nighthawks to take on No. 4 Enfield in the tourney’s quarterfinals on November 9. The Hawks made it all worthwhile with a 3-2 victory, pushing scored them into the state semis.

Newtown will take on No. 1 Cheshire at neutral site Watertown High on Tuesday, November 13, beginning at 6 pm. A spot in the championship game on the line.

The Nighthawks went 13-2 for an .867 winning percentage during the regular campaign; Enfield was 13-1-2 (.875).

Katie Goyda twice for a 2-0 Nighthawk lead, and it was 2-1 visitors at the half. Ali Kelleher, set up by Reagan Schoen, scored for a 3-1 lead in the second half, and the Hawks held on.

Newtown Coach Stephanie Kearns noted that center midfielder Katie Dirga and defender Camryn Griffin played outstanding games, and Kelleher set the tone for her teammates with a standout performance. NHS goaltender Rebecca Filiato made several saves.
