After a scoreless first half, there was no stopping Newtown High School in its Class L State Tournament first round game with visiting Hamden, at Blue & Gold Stadium, on November 7.

The fifth-seeded Nighthawks erupted with a four-goal effort in the final 30 minutes and cruised to a 4-0 triumph over the No. 12 Green Dragons.

Ali Kelleher, assisted by Kat Trammel, opened the scoring 2:47 out of the halftime break. Katie Dirga made it 2-0 when she converted a penalty stroke 5:48 into the half.

Trammel converted off a penalty corner, assisted by Aniko Walsh, one second before the exact midpoint of the half.

Less than three minutes later, Katie Goyda capped the scoring with a cage-finder assisted by Piper Coleman.

With the win, the Nighthawks advance into the quarterfinal round and will visit No. 4 Enfield on Friday, November 9, starting at 4 pm.
