Truck Vs Equestrienne

Police report an accident between a horseback rider and a dump truck about 5:10 pm September 13 on Toddy Hill Road near Clear View Drive.

Police said motorist James Ryan, 35, of Monroe was driving a 1969 Mack dump truck on Toddy Hill Road as a group of horseback riders was traveling in the opposite direction on a grassy road shoulder adjacent to the truck’s line of travel.

As the truck was passing the riders, one of the horses became frightened, turned toward the roadway and collided with the truck, police said. The horse rolled over and threw its rider, Mary Gover, 12, of 7 Shamrock Lane. Botsford firefighters and the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps went to the scene.

The ambulance transported Gover to Danbury Hospital for treatment of a concussion, hand injury, and scraped arm, police said.

The horse received injuries to its buttocks and was walked to its stable where it was checked out by a veterinarian, police said. Gover’s saddle was damaged in the accident.

Police said Ryan was operating a vehicle with unsafe tires but that the condition of the tires did not contribute to the accident.
