Frederick J. TerHaar, Jr

Frederick J. TerHaar, Jr, 85, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died peacefully March 28 at Masonicare in Wallingford. He was born in Worcester, Mass., May 6, 1928, the son of Ethel (Monigle) and Frederick TerHaar, Sr. He also resided with his long-term partner, Carol Berube, in Wallingford.

In addition to Ms Berube, his companion of 28 years, his daughter Lori Cavallero of Newtown, his sons Larry, and wife Beth, of Danbury and John, and wife Lori, of Bradenton, Fla.; his former spouse Delores TerHaar; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren survive Mr TerHaar.

Upon graduation from North High School in Worcester in 1946, Mr TerHaar joined the US Army and served in the occupation of Japan. After the Army, he graduated from Worcester Junior College. During his college years he learned to fly and soon thereafter became a commercial pilot with United Airlines. He participated in the golden years of aviation, flying DC-3s to DC-10s, and retired from United Airlines in 1988.

Mr TerHaar enjoyed water and snow skiing while his children were growing up, and captaining his sailboat for many years in retirement.

Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Monday, March 31, from 5 to 7 pm, with a service at 7 pm. A graveside service will take place for family and close friends Tuesday, April 1, at 11 am, at Resurrection Cemetery in Newtown.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
