Jess Gibbons had quite a milestone accomplishment on April 10. Gibbons joined Kate Bowen in the 100 hits category.

She collected her sixth base hit of the season, and 100th of her career, and later added another hit in the Newtown High School softball team’s 10-3 win over visiting Pomperaug of Southbury.

“It’s hard to live up to Kate Bowen, but it feels good,” said a modest Gibbons, claiming that Bowen, a 2010 Newtown High graduate now playing at Manhattan College, faced some pretty tough pitchers during her playing days.

Not that Gibbons, who often gets pitched around by opposing teams because of her threat to drive in runs, hasn’t.

Gibbons and teammates Mikayla Kuligowski, Kayla O’Leary, and Dani Shine, all collected two hits and scored three runs in the win over Pomperaug, which gave the Nighthawks their third straight victory and a 4-2 record to begin the spring. Shine also drove in three runs, and pitcher Gillian Galante picked up her third win of the season.

The Nighthawks, following a spring break visit to Walt Disney World, were scheduled to resume South-West Conference play against Weston on May 18.

Jess Gibbons collected her 100th career hit in Newtown's win over Pomperaug on April 10.
