Girls’ Booters, Spikers Roll In First Round Of States

UPDATE: This post has been updated to reflect a time change and name of the second-round opponent for the NHS volleyball team.

Newtown High School’s girls’ soccer and volleyball teams won their Class LL state tournament openers, on November 5.

The eighth-seeded soccer team defeated visiting and No. 25 Enfield 6-2, in the rain at Blue & Gold Stadium. Karsen Pirone had three goals and an assist, Emma Curtis scored twice, and Katie Rowan added a goal for the Nighthawks in their first-round win.

Newtown will host No. 9 Amity of Woodbridge on Wednesday, November 7, beginning at 2 pm. The Nighthawks defeated Amity 2-0 in the season opener.

The fifth-seeded volleyball team beat No. 28 New Milford 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) in the first round.

Kim Buttery had 17 assists, five digs, and six aces. Natalie Horn had four digs and three aces. Erin Mitchell had five kills. Genevieve Murray had seven kills. Sarah Nowacki had five kills.

The NHS spikers will host No. 12 Darien in the second round, on Thursday, November 8, at 5 pm.
