Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team had a nice South-West Conference team championship encore, as the Nighthawks swept through the competition, capturing all seven championships in the individual tournament which culminated with finals matches at the Middlebury Racquet Club on May 23. The NHS boys’ tennis team, meanwhile, also had a strong showing of its own by capturing a pair of titles in individual tourney play, which concluded at Weston Racquet Club, also on May 23.

In girls’ action, Newtown had five top seeds and a pair of second seeds prevail. No. 1 Caroline Kelly earned a 6-1, 6-3 win over her opponent from Barlow, 6-1, 6-3 in the first singles category. Another NHS top-seed, Lauren Beier, earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over her Lauralton Hall opponent at second singles.

Second seeds Mia Terracino and Aimee Alexander won at third and fourth singles, respectively. Terracino earned a 7-5, 6-3 over her opponent from Weston, and Alexander topper her Bethel counterpart by 6-3, 6-0 scores.

In doubles play, all of Newtown’s tandems were top seeds and defeated counterparts from Joel Barlow of Redding. The No. 1 doubles team of Stephanie Roman and Julia Frattaroli won 6-0, 6-2. The No. 2 team of Lauren Frazzetta and Annie Beier came out on top, 6-3, 6-4. And the No. 3 doubles team of Grace Winans and Meghan Logan won 6-3, 6-0.

“Unbelievable,” Coach Maureen Maher said of her team members winning each title. “When we got in this was our goal.”

Alexander overcame an opponent she had never faced before, and Terracino earned a win against a player who had defeated her in a previous meeting.

“They were very confident — they were very positive. They set a goal to win,” Maher said.

On the boys’ courts, Newtown’s top singles player Cam McCleary earned SWC champion status for the second year in a row by defeating Blake Norton of Bunnell of Stratford, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 in the finals.

“Keeping his cool and his focus, Cam staved off a pair of daunting comebacks by Norton, who had beaten him 6-0, 7-5 in their regular-season matchup,” Newtown Coach Marty Margulies said.

McCleary had defeated Immaculate of Danbury’s Alex Masi 8-0 in the quarterfinals and then replicated a team championship match upset victory over Weston’s Oscar Morris with an even more decisive 6-0, 6-2 win in the individual tourney semis. Morris had beaten McCleary twice during the regular campaign before the Newtown ace took control of the rivalry in the postseason.

Teammate Yossi Kohrman-Glaser won the championship at fourth singles, beating Matt DePalma of New Milford, 6-1, 6-4, the boys’ program’s second successive championship at fourth singles. Kohrman-Glaser was in complete control of the match as has been the case throughout the season, his coach said.

Newtown’s Ricky Fuentes was the third singles runner-up, as he was last year. He sustained a tough loss to Weston’s Jack Lawless.

At second singles, Sean Elliott had to retire because of illness and injury midway through his semifinal-round match. He had fought to a 7-6 win over his New Fairfield opponent and dropped the second set by a 6-2 count. Elliott, in addition to battling an ongoing hip injury, suffered groin pull and, to top it off, was feeling a bit under the weather.

“He went as long as he could,” Margulies said of Elliott. “He showed incredible courage and grit. I think if he stayed healthy we could have won it all.”

The No. 1 doubles team of Nic Klein and Keaton McCleary won their quarterfinal match with Masuk of Monroe, 8-0, but lost a thriller in the semis as their Weston opponents overcame a 6-3 NHS win in the first set to win the next two, 7-6, 6-2.

“Keaton and Nic played the finest tennis of their lives, and some of the finest doubles I have ever witnessed in this conference, before running out of steam late in the second set,” Margulies said. “They really played spirited tennis.”

Third doubles players Kunal Marwah and Mike Dutsar reached the semifinals before falling to opponents from Pomperaug of Southbury, 7-6, 6-2.
