Newtown High School's girls' tennis team avenged a 4-3 early-season loss to South-West Conference foe Joel Barlow of Redding with a 4-3 win of its own, at home, in a rematch on May 8.

Marie Ann Tomaj won 6-3, 6-0 at first singles, and Amanda Berry was triumphant 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles position. In doubles play, the No. 2 tandem of Hayley Lambert and Julia Klein came out on top 7-6, 6-2, and the No. 3 duo of Julia Dolan and Hayley Klein won 6-1, 6-2.

"The girls were so excited and we were so happy for them - true team effort," Newtown Coach Maureen Maher said.

This was a nonconference match so the win will only help Newtown in its state ranking, but it still benefits the Nighthawks in regard to the conference in another way.

"Definitely makes them more confident going in to SWCs," Maher said of the Nighthawks getting ready for the SWC tournament, which gets started with semifinals on Monday, May 14.

The Nighthawks are slated to finish the regular season with a visit to Pomperaug of Southbury on Thursday. Newtown fell 5-2 to Pomperaug in their first meeting, on May 2. The Hawks won their next couple of matches by 7-0 scores, defeating host Stratford on May 3 and visiting Bethel on May 7.

Against Bethel, Tomaj and Berry both won 6-0, 6-0, Megan Cooney won 6-3, 6-2 at third singles, and Jen Lorenz won 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles. The No. 1 doubles team of Julia Anderson and Amanda Conrod prevailed 6-1, 6-1, the No. 2 team of Lambert and Sophie Wolfman won 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and the No. 3 team of Julia Klein and Julia Dolan won 8-2 in an eight game pro set.

Newtown's boys's tennis team fell 5-2 at Pomperaug on May 2, blanked visiting Stratford 7-0 on May 3, lost 4-3 at Bethel on May 7, and closed out the season with a 7-0 defeat to host Barlow on May 8.
