Glebe House Seeking Volunteers

WOODBURY — Glebe House Museum & The Gertrude Jekyll Garden is seeking enthusiastic people with an interest in historic homes and gardens to volunteer their time to share the knowledge they will learn about this historic site with the public.

The museum, set in historic Woodbury’s village center, offers visitors a glimpse of Revolutionary era Connecticut.

Museum visitors are introduced to this family and their daily life in Woodbury in the 1700s. They also learn how The Gertrude Jekyll Garden came to be planted and what its significance is to the gardening world.

The house and garden is open to the public from May through November and by appointment throughout the year. The museum also offers special group and school tours, community events, lectures, after-school programs, summer camps and other programs.

Volunteer positions include serving as shopkeepers and docents, and assisting with newsletters, publicity, special events, office work, bookkeeping, mailings, and garden maintenance.

Volunteers serving in any capacity will need to receive training, which will include an orientation, an overview of the history of the house and garden, a basic introduction to some of the daily work done in the 18th Century (such as spinning), and guide training.

Training will take place on Saturdays, March 4, 11 and 18, from 9 am to noon, at the museum. Sessions will be repeated on Tuesdays, March 7, 14 and 21, from 9 am to noon.

Call Judith Kelz, the museum’s education director, at 262-2855 to register.
