The Newtown Hawks Green softball team won the U14 Babe Ruth championship hosted in Newtown July 5–7. The Hawks Green squad was one of eight teams competing along with Newtown Hawks White, Brookfield, Ridgefield, Cheshire, Danbury, New Milford, and Greenwich.

The Hawks Green went undefeated in the tournament, winning its pool play game on the first night and then winning all three double elimination games the next day, and then beating Brookfield 9-4 in the championship game on the third day.

Pitchers Lauren Wilcox and Julia Garcia and catcher Megan Fuller did a tremendous job as well as all of their teammates in the 90-plus-degree heat throughout the weekend.

“It’s awesome. They’ve been working really hard,” Manager Monica Ortega said.

The team also won the Summer C Spectacular 16U tourney in Meriden, despite going up against older players, this past weekend.

“They’re really on a roll. They’re working really hard,” Ortega said.

The Hawks Green will look to keep these winning ways going when the team competes in the U16 New England Regional Tournament in Pittsfield, Mass., during the weekend of July 26–28. “You’re playing against the best of the best,” Ortega said of facing state winners from the other New England states

The Newtown Babe Ruth Softball League thanks Travel Director Crystal Carvalho for all of her hard work in running the U14 tournament this past week.
