Town Players of Newtown will begin performances of its new production this weekend.

Written by Tennessee Williams and being directed by Terry Polvay, Suddenly Last Summer will open at The Little Theatre on Friday, July 20, and continue weekends through August 11.

In one of Williams's most haunting pieces of writing, audiences learn how far will a mother go to preserve her son's reputation.

Catherine Holly witnessed the murder of her cousin Sebastian, which sent her to a psychiatric hospital. When Sebastian's mother invites a psychiatrist to question Catherine about her story, she paints a picture so graphic, it's almost unbelievable.

Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays, July 20 through August 11, at 8 pm; and Sundays, July 29 and August 5, at 2 pm.

There is also a Thursday evening performance planned, with an 8 pm curtain, on August 9.

Tickets are $22 for the evening shows, $18 for the matinees.

They can be purchased through the Town Players website, newtownplayers.org, or by calling 203-270-9144 or sending e-mail to reservations@newtownplayers.org; leave or write a message indicating which performance and how many tickets are to be held. Payment will be required at the door for phone or e-mail reservations.

The Little Theatre is at 18 Orchard Hill Road, off South Main Street (Route 25).
