Hawley Elementary School and Sandy Hook Elementary School students sang seasonal songs of cheer on December 5 during all-school assemblies.

All of Newtown’s schools were scheduled to hold concerts between December 3 and January 28 as part of the 2018-19 Winter Performance Schedule announced by the district in November.

Hawley’s fourth grade concert was held for parents the evening of December 6, and Sandy Hook’s fourth grade concert was also held the same evening for parents. The concerts were held at the respective schools.

“I give you your fourth grade,” Hawley Principal Christopher Moretti said before music teacher Jill Marak led students in the concert. Keri Salustri played piano for the assembly.

The voices of the children filled the gymnasium as their fellow students swayed along in the audience to the beat of the song, “Season of Bells.”

“The time has begun to have merry fun,” the Hawley fourth graders sang.

Other songs sung by the Hawley fourth graders included a rendition of “Winter Fantasy” with “Jingle Bells,” “Spin, Spin, Spin,” and “Snowday.”

Later in the day, Sandy Hook School’s student body filled the school’s cafetorium to hear the fourth graders sing.

“The fourth graders have worked so hard on their concert, and you are going to love it today,” said music teacher Maryrose Kristopik.

Gale Burna accompanied the concert on piano.

Songs sung at the Sandy Hook School concert included a Russian folksong called “Minka,” “Shine Little Light,” “A Million Dreams,” and “Light The Candles All Around the World,” which had students hold candles throughout the cafetorium. Later, all of the students were encouraged to sing along to songs like “Deck The Halls,” “Frosty The Snowman,” and “Dredyl, Dredyl, Dredyl.”

A list of upcoming concerts and productions is available here. The concerts are free, and members of the public are welcome to attend.
