HERITAGE LECTURE SERIES

LEXINGTON, MASS. — The National Heritage Museum is debuting the Heritage Lecture Series, a new program designed to investigate the current American spirit, as well as its intellectual and cultural framework.

 The series will feature distinguished national speakers and begins on Sunday, January 12, at 2 pm, with journalist R.D. Sahl leading a panel discussion on the impact of terrorism, war and the Homeland Security Act on Americans and the media. “Freedom, Security and the Public’s Right to Know” will include panelist Tony Kahn, award-winning journalist and special correspondent and host of Tony Kahn’s Journal on NPR’s The World.

The series continues on Sunday, February 2, with “Attic Antiques: Mining for History at Home,” featuring Dan Elias of Antiques Roadshow. Elias will discuss how the program has captured the attention of the nation and changed how people think about family treasures and history. Immediately following the talk, Karen M. Keane of Skinner, Inc will select 25 artifacts from the first 100 items brought by audience members and share the significance and value of the objects. On Thursday, February 6, at 7 pm, Libby O’Connell of the History Channel will highlight how the American view of the past has evolved including how the popular television network has connected Americans to their heritage on a national, local and individual level. The series highlight will feature a lecture on Wednesday, April 23, 7 pm, by filmmaker Ken Burns. “American Lives, American Icons” will reveal how Burns uses film to illuminate American history and the people who have shaped it.

“Talking American” with Christine Ammer, noted author of the American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms and Facts on File Dictionary of Cliches, concludes the series as she explores the connection between language and culture on Sunday, April 27, 2 pm.

SOUTH EGREMONT, MASS. — Fifty-eight members of the Berkshire County Antiques and Arts Dealers Association (BCAADA) met December 9 to elect the board and plan marketing initiatives.

New member shops were welcomed, a total of ten. They are: Phil Watson Antiques and Vintage Lighting, Berkshire Antiques, both in Great Barrington; Stair Auction Galleries, Signed Correctly, both in Claverack, N.Y.; Tokonoma Gallery, Housatonic; Ballyhack Antiques, Cornwall, Conn.; Loring Gallery, Sheffield; Millerton (N.Y.) Antiques Center; Hillary Beadell Antiques, Holsten Galleries, both in Stockbridge.

President Edith Gilson spoke of new group advertising ventures occurring month-ly in select antiques journals. Two or more full pages are purchased and shared by members at discount rates.

Elise Abrams announced plans for a civic project, that of donating member gifts for an aquarium at the admitting room at Fairview Hospital, Great Barrington.

Donald Cesario detailed various advertising strategies and said reader response was strong to ads for BCAADA brochures placed in New England newspapers.

The current board was re-elected, with an opening for secretary. Officers are: president, Edith Gilson of Cupboards & Roses, Sheffield; vice president, Patrice Mullin, Mullin-Jones, Great Barrington; treasurer, Susan Silver, Sheffield; advertising board, Donald Cesario, Darr Antiques, and Norma Sweet, Saturday Sweets, both in Sheffield.

The board at large is: Elise Abrams, Elise Abrams Antiques and Donald Coffman, Coffman Antiques, both in Great Barrington; Arthur Kerber, Green Rivers Gallery, Millerton, N.Y.; Charles Flint, Charles Flint Antiques, Lenox; Kathleen Tetro, Corner House Antiques, Sheffield; David Weiss, David Weiss Antiques, Mill River.
