Not surprisingly, Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team gave host Bunnell of Stratford all it could handle for the better part of their South-West Conference tournament quarterfinal contest, on February 22. Ultimately, Bunnell’s accurate 3-point shooting helped pave the way to a 65-52 win.
Newtown High School’s boys’ basketball team saw the host Bunnell Bulldogs of Stratford overcome a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter for a 78-75 regular-season finale victory on February 19. The good news for the Nighthawks is that they won three quarters and will get a second chance at taking care of business — with a lot more on the line.
Newtown High School had strong representation against the best indoor track and field competitors in Connecticut at the State Open, held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven on February 16.
Will Arndt, former Newtown High School quarterback, went on to have a record-setting career at Western Connecticut State University and continues his career at the professional level — playing for Ottawa in the Canadian Football League. Arndt was back in town this winter, and along with teammate and former Detroit Lions player Noel Thomas, he hosted the Football Passing Academy at NYA Sports & Fitness.
Newtown High School’s wrestling team, led by Joe Zeller’s run the title in the heavyweight division, tied East Hartford for 12th in the Class LL state wrestling championships, at Trumbull High, on February 16.
Newtown High School’s girls’ basketball team replicated a dominant performance against New Fairfield, defeating the Rebels — whom they trounced in the last game of the regular season — with an even more convincing triumph in the playoff opener.
