John Doherty

John J. Doherty, 87, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died November 29. Mr Doherty was born in the Bronx January 24, 1931, to Beatrice (McDermott) and Patrick Doherty.

His wife of 38 years, Marlene; his children and their spouses, Danny and Sharon Doherty of Sandy Hook, Dennis and Kathy Doherty of Jackson, N.J., David Doherty of Maryland, Brita Doherty of Maryland, John, Jr, and Karen Doherty of West Haven, and Christopher and Jaime Doherty of Virginia; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren survive him.

Mr Doherty was a proud veteran of the Korean War, having served in the US Marine Corps from 1951 until 1954. He was awarded three Purple Hearts but refused the last one.

He was very involved with the VFW in Derby while living in Connecticut, and then in Myrtle Beach when he moved to South Carolina approximately 13 years ago. He was also a member of the Purple Heart Society in both states.

Mr Doherty was a meat cutter, first working for A&P in New York. He eventually retired from Stop & Shop in Derby.

A memorial service will take place Memorial Day weekend in 2019 at St Rose Church in Newtown. Burial will be in St Rose Cemetery, Sandy Hook.
