Joseph Michael “Joe” Mahoney, 71, of Hancock, Mass., formerly of Newtown, died May 15 in Pittsfield, Mass., of natural causes. He was born July 16, 1946, in Danbury, and he was a beloved husband, father, brother, and doting grandfather.

Mr Mahoney graduated from Newtown High School and joined the United States Marine Corps. After completing four years of service, he received a degree in Business Administration from Sacred Heart University and went on to earn a Master’s of Business Administration from the University of New Haven.

A longtime resident of Newtown, Mr Mahoney served on the Legislative Council from 1988 to 1997. Before retirement, he worked as the vice president of investments at UBS Financial Service Inc. He enjoyed playing baseball and road biking when he was younger. He was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his family.

His wife, Gail; brother, Tom Mahoney; children, Michelle Mahoney and her significant other, Geoff Cornell, and Beth Gilman and her husband, Patrick Gilman; and grandson, Brooks, survive him.

In honor of Mr Mahoney, his loved ones say the Irish Blessing, “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields, and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”
