SYRACUSE, N.Y. — “Sueños: Celebrating the Surreal” is on view at The Point of Contact Gallery through September 21.

Titled after the Spanish translation for “dreams” and in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, “Sueños: Celebrating the Surreal” highlights works by contemporary Latin American artists who share in the characteristics of dream-like imagery. All works in the show are from Syracuse University’s permanent collections.

Featuring works by Salvador Dalí, Mauricio Lasansky, Joseph Kugielsky, Adàl Maldonado, Pedro Roth, and others, “Sueños” is a collaborative project between Community Folk Art Center, Light Work, Point of Contact Gallery and Syracuse University Art Galleries. “The Tower,” and “The Last Supper” are two works by Newtown artist Joseph Kugielsky (b 1951, Buenos Aires) that center the exhibition. Mr Kugielsky offered an artist’s talk during the exhibition’s opening reception on September 7. He was also a guest speaker the prior afternoon for a class at Syracuse University.

Curated by Natalie McGrath, Point of Contact’s assistant director and an art history graduate student, with exhibition design consultation from Professor Juan Juarez of Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, the exhibition reveals the depth of the university and gallery’s collections and the wide-ranging art that falls within the parameters of a dream.

The Point of Contact Gallery is at 350 West Fayette Street. Hours are noon to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, or by appointment. For additional information, 315-443-2169 or puntopoint.org.

Joseph Kugielsky peers through one of four peepholes in his 9-foot sculptural building entitled “The Tower.” Constructed in the mid-1990s, “The Tower” has 51 windows through which multi-layered transparencies are mounted as windows referencing art historical, architectural, and abstract images, all by photographer Joseph Kugielsky.
Kugielsky’s second work in the Syracuse exhibit is “The Last Supper.” The large transparency with multiple layers measures 3½ feet wide by 3 feet tall.
Attendees view "The Tower" during the opening reception of “Sueños: Celebrating the Surreal,” September 7 at The Point of Contact Gallery. The exhibition, which includes two works by Newtown resident Joseph Kugielsky, among others, is on view until September 21.
