UPDATE: The championship game, originally scheduled for Thursday, May 23, has been postponed and rescheduled for the afternoon of Friday, May 24. The game will begin at 1:30 pm.

NEW FAIRFIELD — Looking to make it nine straight South-West Conference tournament wins, Newtown High School’s girls’ lacrosse team won its SWC Division I semifinal round clash with New Milford, 15-10, on the turf at New Fairfield High on May 21.

Newtown, the No. 2 seed in the tourney, held an 11-8 second-half lead on the third-seeded Green Wave before pulling away behind four unanswered goals. Julia Trudell led the offensive attack with five goals, Tressa Scott scored three times, Kristie VosWinkel netted two and added four assists, Erin Kenning and Meaghan Brophy both scored twice, and Caroline Kingsley found the back of the net once.

The Nighthawks advanced to the May 23 title game against fourth-seeded Brookfield, a winner over No. 1 New Fairfield in the other semifinal. Brookfield High is the site of the championship, so Newtown’s opponent gained home-field advantage for the pinnacle tilt.

On April 30, New Fairfield became the first conference rival to defeat Newtown since the 2006 campaign, knocking off the Hawks in a 17-16 nail-biter, but the favored Rebels didn’t get a chance to repeat the feat when it mattered most. New Fairfield lost a 12-11 heart-breaker to a Brookfield squad that worked its way into the semis with a win over fifth-seeded Joel Barlow of Redding in the quarterfinals. Both New Fairfield and Newtown had first-round byes in the six-team tourney.

The Hawks defeated Brookfield 14-4 back on April 6 in the second game of the campaign.

Julia Trudell moves with the ball during Newtown's 15-10 win over New Milford in the SWC tourney semifinals on May 21. Trudell netted five goals in the triumph.
