On Wednesday, February 27, at 1:30 pm, The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown will have Jim Laurino of Burlington, Conn., painting a landscape in oil.

This month’s program will take place at Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street.

The reception for SCAN’s Annual Color in Winter Show will take place the same day, also at the municipal center, immediately following the demonstration, from 3 to 4:30 pm. Color in Winter is on view through the end of March.

The reception will also celebrate the work of the Clay Dates Potters, on view through February 28 at the municipal center. The work of Newtown residents Roberta Ahuja, Ros Lilkengren, and Karen Pinto is being presented in a new glass showcase purchased through a grant received by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission.

Both events are free and open to the public.

Jim Laurino began painting as a teenager and eventually studied design and color theory at the University of Connecticut. Through workshops and self-study, he has cultivated a bold representational painting style that balances the impressionists influence with contemporary subject matter.

His expressive application of paint, married with a keen eye for classic New England scenes, charms viewers and makes his work unique.

Additionally, Mr Laurino constructs frames for all of his paintings. The frames, which are made out of reclaimed wood material, fashion a rustic window into each piece, subtly complimenting his work.

A brief write-up of Jim’s approach to painting and framing was featured in the January 2018 issue of Plein-Air Magazine.

Mr Laurino’s paintings are in numerous private collections. He shows his work in galleries throughout the Nutmeg State and enjoys participating in competitive events across the Northeast. He recently placed third in the Finger-Lakes 2018 plein-air competition.

Reservations are not required for SCAN events, but additional information is available by visiting scanart.org.

“Maple Hollow back door” is a 12-by-16-inch oil on canvas by Jim Laurino, who will be the guest artist for The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown on February 27.
