Offering a free, two-hour workshop on February 23 on fruit tree pruning are members of The Victory Garden, Newtown Forest Association (NFA), and the Huckleberry Finn School of Arborculture.

The event will be at 1 pm at The Victory Garden in Fairfield Hills, behind the duplexes on Washington Square. Those planning to attend should dress to work outdoors, and arrive equipped with questions and a hand pruner. This is a hands-on class.

Participants will learn techniques for pruning several types of semi-dwarf fruit tree species and shaping espalier apple trees. Arborist and NFA member Dan Dalton will lead the workshop.

Registration is required and can be done by contacting Harvey Pessin at harveypessin@gmail.com or contact 203-241-0301.

The Victory Garden is an all-volunteer organization that grows several thousand pounds of fresh vegetables and fruit every year for local food pantries. Additional volunteers are welcome to join the community. Contact gailfried47@gmail.com.

NFA is Connecticut’s oldest land trust, protecting and stewarding more than 1300 acres of open meadows, fields, forests, and waterways in Newtown. The association recently earned recognition as the best all-volunteer land trust in the nation from the national Land Trust Alliance. For more information, visit newtownforestassociation.org.
