Police report that after learning that they held a warrant for his arrest, a local man went to the police station on the morning of Monday, July 31, and was charged with 12 offenses, alleging illegal sexual activity with children under age 16.

Police said they arrested Richard Saunders, 72, of 151 Huntingtown Road with four counts each of impairing the morals of a child, risk of injury to a minor, and fourth-degree sexual assault.

Police held Saunders on $100,000 bail for an arraignment on the charges that day in state Superior Court in Danbury. Information on the arraignment was not available from court late Monday morning.

Police said that Saunders is accused of several incidents of sexual contact with minor children during the past several years. School Resource Officer William Chapman, acting as the police department's youth officer, investigated the allegations against Saunders, which led to police receiving the court warrant for his arrest. The case involves multiple victims, police said.

Police received a complaint on July 8 which resulted in their investigation.
