Medicare Info Session Planned In Newtown

HARTFORD — An information session designed to help seniors decide how to respond if their Medicare managed care plans announce that they will be withdrawing from the area will be held in Newtown on September 13, according to State Rep John E. Stripp, R-135.

The program will take place at 1 pm that Wednesday at the Newtown Senior Center on Riverside Road. Representatives of the state departments of social services and insurance will lead the program. Similar sessions are being held across the state.

“I encourage all seniors in the area who are covered by Medicare managed care plans to attend one of these sessions,” Rep Stripp said. “If you know about the available alternatives, you will be well-prepared to choose whatever options best suit you, should the need arise.”

Some Medicare HMOs announced this summer that they are leaving parts of Connecticut as of December 31. Medicare beneficiaries can return to traditional Medicare with a supplemental (Medigap) policy or choose another Medicare HMO if available. Connecticut also offers supplemental insurance to persons with very low income and assets.

“Although I do not believe Fairfield County seniors are in danger of losing their Medicare managed care plans, I think it is best to be prudent and find out what options are available,” Rep Stripp said.
