After careful consideration and weighing the risks of possible severe weather, organizers of the Newtown’s 22nd Annual Health & Public Safety Fair have decided to cancel the inflatable MEGA Body exhibit that had been planned to take over much of the front lawn at 11 Queen Street. They are still expecting all other activities at the event to happen as planned, however.

The free community health showcase and informational event is set for Saturday, October 3, from 9 am to 1 pm, at Newtown Middle School. Most events will be set up inside the school's gymnasium.

Organizers Dr Della Schmid, Mae Schmidle, Health District Director Donna Culbert, and Judy Blanchard, the school district’s Recovery Project director and Newtown Prevention Council co-chair, are promising loads of free screenings, giveaways, raffles, family safety tips, and introductions to dozens of health and safety professionals.

Ms Culbert described the Health& Public Safety Fair as “a one-stop opportunity for anyone in Newtown to meet many of our local and regional community health partners who will be offering both traditional and alternative health screenings, information, and demonstrations.”

Dozens of health and safety organizations and agencies have committed to this year’s event, from local first responders, Social Services, Parks & Recreation and Public Works representatives, to those who will be offering acupuncture, flu shots, posture analysis, cardio screenings, and more.

For more information contact Ms Culbert at the Newtown Health District, 203-270-4291 or e-mail donna.culbert@newtown-ct.gov.

Fraser Woods Montessori School preschooler Kody Hendricks, shown, was one of many students recently screened by Lions Club and Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) volunteers. The screenings will continue at local preschools and schools through October 2, and more eye screenings will be available at eh upcoming Health Fair, October 3, for the community. Kody patiently sat for his screening on Friday, September 25, while Lions Club member Steve Bennett conducted the screening. Mr Bennett was joined by Lions Club member Doug Body and VNA member Anna Wiedemann for the day's screenings. The effort is expected to screen roughly 150 preschoolers before the Health Fair.
