Newtown High School sophomore Tyler DiMartino and others with the Newtown Ecumenical Workcamp Servants (NEWS) are hoping to bring shoes to West Virginia when they travel to Summers County later this month.

As a NEWS volunteer, and in addition to working onsite to help repair homes for low-income families, Tyler wants to do something more to help the community he is serving. He is collecting gently worn and new shoes of all types to be distributed to people in need. Sneakers and shoes for all ages will be accepted until June 20.

The group of Newtown teens and chaperones is traveling to Summers County from June 22-30 and will be collecting shoes through June 20 at several locations in town — Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street; St Rose Church, 46 Church Hill Road; Newtown High School main office, 12 Berkshire Road; and Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

The group will work with Appalachia Service Project, a well-organized outreach program lending assistance to poorer rural communities in the Appalachia region.

For more information, e-mail Tyler DiMartino at donateshoesforwv@gmail.com.
