Newtown Continuing Education Classes Available

Newtown Continuing Education has limited openings available in the following classes and activities. Contact Newtown Continuing Education at 203-426-1787, 9 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday, for further information on dates, times, and location or visit newtowncontinuinged.org.

Yoga And You — A ten-class course on Mondays, starting March 18, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, $99. For new or seasoned practitioners, this class will help discover and round out the practice. Traditional postures with variations will help to expand the experience.

The World Of Alfred Hitchcock — A one-class course, March 18, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, $59. Known as “the master of suspense,” Alfred Hitchcock has had a major influence on Hollywood movies and television with many of his tales of suspense and horror. This presentation is a must for those who love the stories and movies of this bygone era.

Cover Letter Writing 101 — A one-class course, March 18, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, $30. This one-hour presentation will examine what goes into a top-notch cover letter and why they are important; attendees will have the opportunity to create a rough copy of a cover letter. No discounts apply.

First Aid — A one-class course, March 19, 6 pm to 9 pm, $104. For those that want to learn what to do during emergencies, Positively Shocking LLC will teach skills and provide class-goers with a two-year American Red Cross certification in first aid in an easy and fun environment. This course is designed so that lay persons will react with confidence in an emergency situation. In addition, students can also register for a one-night class in CPR. Mary Sireci, Certified Instructor, will teach the class.

A Fool-Proof Organizing Process To Eliminate Clutter — A one-class course, March 19, 7:30 pm to 9 pm, $29. This class offers a step-by-step guide on how to clear the clutter. Organizing is a skill that can be learned, and this class is the first step. Course-goers should bring a purse/handbag/backpack to class (do not pre-organize.) They can also e-mail questions they would like to discuss ahead of time to the instructor through the website innerspacesbykaren.com.

Belly Dance Fitness — An eight-class course on Tuesdays, starting March 19, 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, $89. Basic choreography along with pop music and traditional middle eastern music will have the class dancing away the calories. Beautiful hip scarves and silk veils provided. Workout clothes recommended.

Beginner Knitting Circle, Ages 18 and Up — An eight-class course on Wednesdays, starting March 20, 6:45 pm to 7:45 pm or 11 am to noon, $129. Learn to cast on, knit, purl, and more, creating a fashionable project to start. Learn about different fibers, try out different types and sizes of needles, and more. Crochet basics will also be taught. Students need to bring in a skein of super bulky-weight yarn (recommended: Lion Brand Wool-Ease “Thick N Quick” available at Jo-Ann Stores, Michaels, or Amazon) of their choice, and US size 13 or 15 knitting needles to start.

Express Yourself: Acting And Creative Self-Expression — An eight-class course on Wednesdays, starting March 20, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, $129. This class goes far beyond the “normal” acting class, offering simple, empowering tools that can be applied to any type of performing as well as public speaking. Students will experience first-hand what it means to be truly “present,” relaxed, engaged, and fully self-expressed in an environment that is inspiring and supportive. Students will also leave with a clearer sense of their own creativity and creative goals, and the confidence to manifest them. Actors and performers of all levels of experience are welcome, as well as anyone wishing to feel more comfortable speaking in front of others. Students should bring a one to three minute monologue, poem, story, song (can be self-written), preferably committed to memory. The class is taught by Sheri Bresson, an actor, singer, writer and teacher, and a graduate of Tisch School of the Arts.

Buying A Computer? — A one-class course, March 20, 3:15 pm to 5:45 pm, $39. For those considering purchasing a new computer or those who want to understand more about the types of computers available, the class will discuss many aspects of making the purchase, including what type of computer might best suit the needs, what hardware features are important, what security software and other services may be needed, and more.

Beginner Sign Language — A six-class course on Wednesdays, starting March 20, 7 pm to 8 pm, $125. Learn a new language in six weeks. This class is for the person who has always wanted to learn sign language. This is a great class to take with a friend or family member so you can practice. No discounts apply.

Word — A four-class course on Thursdays, starting March 21, 6:30 pm to 9 pm, $129. Learn the basics to successfully use Microsoft Word, the best-selling word processing software. Learn how to create and edit documents, how to format documents, how to use spell-check and thesaurus, how to cut/copy/paste, how to create multiple column layouts and custom tabs, how to use bullet and number lists, and many other features. No prior word processing knowledge is necessary, but a basic knowledge of computers is helpful.

Long-Term Care — A one-class course, March 21, 6:30 pm to 8 pm, $29. With roughly 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day from now until 2030, the future costs of long-term care — and healthcare in general — are a top concern of current and soon-to-be retirees. It’s also one of the toughest decisions to make but given the rising costs of care it’s a critical consideration for long-term retirement planning.

Studio Art — A six-class course on Thursdays, starting March 21, 6 pm to 7:30 pm, $99. Studio art is structured like a traditional high school or undergraduate foundational art course and includes content in traditional drawing, painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Students will experiment with a variety of media in each discipline, with emphasis on foundation, building, problem solving, and conceptual exploration. Studio art is ideal for beginning artists seeking regular studio time, students seeking to develop their portfolios, and/or for anyone looking for a fun and engaging general art experience.

Ballroom Dancing — A four-class course on Thursdays, starting March 21, 7 pm to 8 pm, $99/couple or $51/single. Learn the fox trot, waltz, cha-cha, and more. Joe Williams and Noni Low have been dancing together for more than 21 years and teaching ballroom dance for beginners to advanced for more than 15 years. Their basic concept of ballroom dancing consists of having fun with easy-to-learn instructions. Couples and singles welcome.

Tai Chi Easy, Five Form Series — A five-class course on Thursdays, starting March 21, 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, $99. Master five forms combining breath with meditative gentle movement. Tai chi practice is great for improving balance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and sleep quality. Research has proven tai chi practice to help relieve pain, heal disease, reduce stress, and support PTSD and drug and alcohol recovery.

Wellness Sampler — A six-class course, starting March 21, 7 pm to 8 pm, $99. Relax, let go, and have fun sampling an assortment of wellness activities including breathing, stretching, meditation, yoga, Tai Chi Easy, qi gong, martial arts, reiki, reflexology, Chakradance, and more.

Raising Backyard Chickens For The Beginner — A two-class course on Thursdays, starting March 21, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, $79. Learn what it takes to raise your own flock (i.e.., money, time, supplies involved) and how to keep them happy and healthy. Topics to be covered will be breeds of chickens, starting a flock, coop, flock management, chicken behavior, and more. No discounts apply.
