Newtown Friends of Music will present the dynamic quartet in the theater of Edmond Town Hall on Sunday, March 20, at 3 pm. It will mark a return to Newtown by the group, who performed an early March concert in the same venue last year.

The Hugo Wolf Quartett was founded at the Vienna Conservatory 15 years ago. Shortly thereafter, the four young musicians — violinists Sebastian Gürtler and Regis Bringolf, violist Gertrud Weinmeister and cellist Florian Berner — won the Fifth International String Quartet Competition in Cremona and took first prize at the 45th International GB. Viotti Chamber Music Competition, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra Special Prize, and the European Cultural Award for Chamber Music. They also made their debut at the Vienna Konzerthaus, a moment that was celebrated by public and press alike.

The quartett has continued to concertize in the most prominent concert halls and renowned festivals. It reached astonishing renown on the international music scene early on in its 15 years in existence.

The program on March 20 will include Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet; Intermezzo for String Quartet in E-flat Major by Hugo Wolf, and String Quartet in C-sharp minor, Opus 131 by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Single tickets are available at the box office, located in the lobby of the former town hall building, for $20 (cash or check only).  Students K-12 are admitted free of charge when accompanied by a ticket-holding adult.  The box office will open one hour before the start of the concert. Reservations are also accepted by calling 203-426-6470.

Parking is free behind Edmond Town Hall and the facility is handicap accessible with all seating providing excellent viewing and acoustics. An informal reception following the concert will offer concertgoers the opportunity to meet and mingle with the musicians.

For information regarding future events, write to Newtown Friends of Music at PO Box 295, Newtown CT 06470-0295, or visit NewtownFriendsOfMusic.org to learn more about programs, the music, the artists and the annual School Outreach Programs (which Hugo Wolf Quartett members will participate in when they visit Newtown High School the day after their public concert).  Because of the high regard for these artists, advance reservations are strongly recommended for this concert.  Call 203-426-6470 to reserve your tickets.
