Newtown High Swimmers, Divers Shine In States

Members of Newtown High School’s girls’ swim team participated in the Class LL state championships this past week and came out with strong performances.

The diving competition was held at Bulkeley High School in Hartford on November 6 and Newtown recorded three top-ten finishes among 28 finalists. The swimming events were held at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven on November 12 and Newtown had a half-dozen top-ten individual and relay race placements. The Nighthawks, as a team, placed seventh among 18 schools. Newtown accumulated 323.5 points; Greenwich won with 804.5. Newtown’s results are as follows:

Diving: 2. Kari Djonne, 346.50, 27 points; 4. Noelle Benson, 329.15, 25 points; 6. Gillian Eckwall, 316.70, 23 points; 21. Natalie Poetl, 270.50, 4 points.

200 Yard Medley Relay: 9. Meg McDonald, Annika Fagerholm, Eliza Eggleston, and Amy Martinelli, 1:56.82, 38 points.

200 Freestyle: 17. Bridget Duero, 2:03.51, 9 points.

200 Individual Medley: 6. McDonald, 2:16.06, 23 points; 20. Fagerholm, 2:20.49, 5 points.

50 Free: 4. Martinelli, 25.05, 24.5 points; 17. Eggleston, 26.16, 9 points.

100 Free: 8. Martinelli, 55.19, 21 points.

500 Free: 16. Duero, 5:35.82, 11 points.

200 Free Relay: 7. Charlotte Gray, Emily Papp, Eggleston, and Martinelli, 1:44.52, 44 points.

100 Backstroke: 11. McDonald, 1:02.27, 16 points.

400 Free Relay: 7. McDonald, Duero, Papp, and Fagerholm, 3:51.04, 44 points.

Annika Fagerholm competes during a meet this season. Fagerholm helped the Nighthawks place seventh in the Class LL state championships.
