Students graduating from eighth grade at Newtown Middle School (NMS) celebrated the milestone achievement with a Moving Up Ceremony that took place in the Newtown High School (NHS) gymnasium on June 12. The graduating class was split into two groups, alphabetically, resulting in separate ceremonies at 4:30 and 7:15 pm.
When students entered the gymnasium to the tune of “Pomp & Circumstance,” family and friends that filled the bleachers on both sides of the room applauded and took photos.
NMS Principal Thomas Einhorn and Superintendent of Schools Dr Lorrie Rodrigue welcomed all in attendance.
“This is a special afternoon for everyone as our students take the next big step into high school and become freshmen — and I can’t believe I’m saying this — as the Class of 2023…” Ms Rodrigue said looking out to those seated before her. “This is such a pivotal moment for all of our students as they begin an important educational journey.”
Students were called individually to walk across the stage and shake hands with the administration present. Graduation certificates would later be distributed in the NHS lobby.
Closing the ceremony, Mr Einhorn told the graduating students, “Change is the only constant in life. Don’t be afraid to embrace it. I wish you all the best and congratulations.”

Students and staff sat in the center of the Newtown High School gymnasium during the Newtown Middle School Moving Up Ceremony while family and friends filled the bleachers to the left and right of them.
In Newtown Middle School Student Council Chair Kirtana Kunzweiler’s speech, she encouraged her peers to “…stay positive, be kind, give back, and always remember don’t take yourself too seriously.”
