Newtown Scholarship Association Award Winners Named

The 2012 Newtown Scholarship Association award winners were named during the Newtown High School graduation ceremony held on Wednesday, June 20, at Western Connecticut State University’s O’Neill Center. Seventeen of the graduates are from Newtown High School and one student is a graduate of the Canterbury School, New Milford.

A total of 18 awards for $41,000 were presented this year. The Newtown Scholarship Association,  founded in 1937, has awarded more than $3 million in need-based scholarships to thousands of Newtown students.  Awards are made possible by the generous contributions received from Newtown residents and businesses.

Stephanie Gaston, chairperson of the awards committee, said, “We are so excited to be celebrating our 75th anniversary this year and are grateful for all of the generous support we receive from Newtown residents and businesses. We wouldn’t be able to do any of this without them.”

She added that this year the total amount of scholarships that will be awarded, including high school graduates and continuing aid, will be around 75 to 80 awards for at least $225,000.
