The Newtown High School boys’ soccer team faced off against Pomeraug of Southbury in a battle for second place in the South-West Conference, at Blue & Gold Stadium on October 17. The two teams got together for Newtown’s senior night in the last regular season home game for the Nighthawks. Newtown came out victorious, 2-0.

With the win, the Nighthawks moved to 9-2-2 and, following a season-ending 5-0 win at Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport on October 21, earned the No. 2 seed in the SWC tourney. Pomperaug fell to 8-3-2 and is the No. 3 seed.

Newtown is scheduled to host No. 7 Masuk of Monroe in the SWC quarterfinals on Saturday, October 26. The game is set for 7 pm at Blue & Gold.

In the game against Pomperaug, Blake Jarvis scored the first goal, in the 38th minute. It was 1-0 at the half. Charlie Poarch tacked on the second goal. Newtown’s stellar defense helped it keep the ball in its possession for a majority of the time.

“We played really well. We passed the ball very well and took quality shots. I believe that we can keep up the good playing and get far in SWCs,” Jarvis said.

Newtown got two goals apiece from Matt Mossbarger and Nata Kalra, and Clay Gattey added a goal in the win over Kolbe.

“We ended the season hot and we look to continue our streak into SWC’s,” Newtown senior captain Logan Puleri said.

Newtown won eight straight games to end the season.

“The team has been great so far this year, I know that we have the ability to win the next few games and potentially win SWCs in the end. We’re a strong team and we deserved the two seed,” said Genti Limani, the team’s manager.

The Nighthawks tied Masuk 2-2 earlier in the season. The winner will advance to play either Pomperaug or No. 6 New Milford in the semifinals, scheduled for 5 pm at neutral site Pomperaug on Monday, October 28. The championship game will be held at Bunnell High School at 7 pm on October 30.
