Bake For FAITH

By Eliza Hallabeck

Under the guidance of Newtown Middle School family and consumer science teacher Anna Russell on Wednesday, December 21, NMS students worked to finalize baking and preparing zucchini bread for transportation to FAITH Food Pantry in Sandy Hook.

According to Ms Russell, part of the family and consumer science curriculum at NMS involves community service.

“And this rotation we are donating zucchini breads that all the classes made, and are now wrapping and packaging for the FAITH Food Pantry,” said Ms Russell.

NMS teacher Bruce Moulthrop delivered the baked goods to FAITH Food Pantry on Thursday, December 22.

Ms Russell said 30 individual loaves were wrapped “for the holidays” and the students were practicing culinary skills learned in the family and consumer science curriculum.

“We were very excited about being able to contribute during the holiday time,” said Ms Russell, with holiday music playing from the corner of the classroom.

NMS eighth grade student Alex Soderholm said the project was “really nice.”

“We’re helping the people that are unfortunate for Christmas, so it is basically nice to do,” said Alex, adding that he enjoyed baking the zucchini bread.

Fellow eighth grader Chloe Blakeman said she found the project motivating.

“It’s Christmas,” said Chloe. “You should be giving, and I feel bad that they didn’t have a lot to give.”

Eighth grader Caitlin Moss said she enjoys cooking, and found the zucchini bread fun to make.

“I think it’s really nice that we are doing this for the less fortunate,” Caitlin said, “because I know that if I were less fortunate, I would love to have people do this for me.”
