Pauline Giglio Mattera

Beloved By Family And Friends

Pauline Giglio Mattera, 68, of Newtown, formerly of Norwalk, died August 19, at Danbury Hospital. She was born Pauline Ann Giglio on June 27, 1942, daughter of Antoinette (Salvato) and Paul Giglio of Norwalk.

Mrs Mattera is survived by her devoted husband and caretaker, John Mattera, whom she married in 1960 following her graduation from Norwalk High School; this October would have marked their 50th wedding anniversary. Together they raised three children, their two sons, Michael Mattera (wife Kristen Anderson Mattera) of Newtown and John Mattera, Jr (wife Karen Sullivan Mattera) of Bethel; and her niece Debbie Palmer Borges of Norwalk. She is also the sister of Anthony Giglio (wife Betty Fleming Giglio) of Naples, Fla. Several brothers and sisters-in-law, including Louis Mattera and his wife, Mary Bruno Mattera, of Newtown survive Mrs Mattera, as well. She will be missed immensely by her eight grandchildren, many of whom are too young to appreciate how lucky they were to have a grandmother with such an enjoyable sense of humor and caring heart. She was a beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews on both the Giglio and Mattera sides of the family. She was predeceased by two siblings and two nieces.

Born and raised in Norwalk, Mrs Mattera attended Norwalk schools. The Matteras owned both Grandma’s Restaurant and Grandma’s Deli in Norwalk and, together with their families, enjoyed many happy memories there. Mrs Mattera was the bookkeeper for the family business, John B. Mattera-Mason Contractor, and more recently for Accurate Graphics in Norwalk, until her retirement.

She will be most remembered for the love she gave to her family — sometimes tough, but always unending and without measure. Always a talker, Mrs Mattera filled the lives of those she loved with stories, jokes, and happy childhood memories on Concord Street. Her smile, sense of humor, and appreciation of family will forever be etched into the heart of anyone she came to know.

Funeral services took place August 21. She will be laid to rest beside her parents and her sister in St John’s Cemetery, Norwalk.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, 26 Broadway, 14th Floor, New York, NY 10004, or at jdrf.org.
