Flagpole Intersection

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the Main Street flagpole intersection about 8:22 am on September 18.

In that incident, motorist Keith Baxter, 29, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2012 Subaru Impreza westward on Church Hill Road, struck the rear end of 2011 Honda CR-V SUV driven by Laura Manz, 50, of Southbury. The collision occurred at the stop sign on Church Hill Road that controls traffic entering the intersection.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Baxter for following too closely.

Two Charges

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Laura Corbo, 49, of East Lyme, went to the police station about 12:26 pm on September 17 and was charged with sixth-degree larceny and with identity theft, police said.

The case involves Corbo having allegedly illegally using another person’s identity in the past to get public utility service. After processing, Corbo was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 3.

Ford Vs Hyundai

Police report that motorist Gary Baluha, 36, of Monroe, who was driving a 2006 Ford Mustang westward on Church Hill Road, attempted to turn left to enter the Blue Colony Diner parking lot at about 2:24 pm on September 16.

A noncontact vehicle in the eastbound straight-ahead lane had stopped to allow the Ford to make the left turn.

However, at that time, motorist Melanie Gajda, 58, of Woodbury, was driving a 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedan in the eastbound right-turn-only lane. The Ford and the Hyundai then collided. There were no injuries. Police issued Baluha a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Breach Of Peace

Police said they were dispatched to a Clearview Drive residence about 11:15 am on September 15 in response to a reported altercation there.

After investigating, police charged Barbara Gonzalez, 45, of Bridgeport with second-degree breach of peace. Gonzalez allegedly made some threatening statements to a resident, police said. After processing, Gonzalez was released on a written promise to appear in court on September 27.

Chevy Vs Guardrail

State police said motorist Jennifer Hernandez, 32, of Nyack, N.Y., who was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze auto westward on Interstate 84, about 500 feet east of Exit 10, at about 3:51 pm on September 14, lost control of the vehicle and struck the median guardrail.

There were no injuries. Enforcement information was not available.

I-84 DUI

State police report that at 1:15 am on September 14, they spotted an erratically driven vehicle traveling on eastbound Interstate 84, west of Exit 10.

State police said they then stopped the motorist to investigate, after which they charged Gabriella Durkin, 22, of Bethel with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. After arrest processing, Durkin was released on $500 non-surety bail for a September 27 court appearance.

Sandy Hook Impact

At about 2:11 pm on September 13, motorist Marta Silva, 23, of Monroe, who was driving a 2004 Chrysler Town & Country minivan on Church Hill Road, near its intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road, struck the rear end of a 2015 Honda Accord driven by Joann Kruzshak, 65, of Thetford, Vt., police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Silva for following too closely.

Ford Vs Pole

About 7:58 pm on September 13, motorist Theresa Chacho, 86, of Monroe, who was driving a 2014 Ford Fiesta compact car southward on Botsford Hill Road, near its intersection with Swamp Road, while approaching a curve to the right drove off the left road shoulder, hit an embankment and then struck a utility pole, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Chacho an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Botsford Crash

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Kelvin Nicholson, 30, of Bridgeport went to the police station about 11:51 am on September 12 and was charged with driving with a suspended license, traveling too fast for conditions, and evading responsibility with a motor vehicle, police said.

Those charges stem from a motor vehicle accident that occurred near the intersection of Botsford Hill Road and Swamp Road about 1:41 am on March 22. Following arrest processing, police released Nicholson on a written promise to appear in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury on September 26.

Church Hill Collision

About 3:18 pm on September 12, motorist Lauren Menousek, 16, of Newtown was driving a 2009 Toyota Matrix hatchback westward on Church Hill Road, as motorist Rosalie Newman, 74, of Newtown, who was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu sedan, was attempting to exit the driveway at the Blue Colony Diner and enter Church Hill Road, police said.

The Chevrolet entered the roadway and the two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Newman received a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Key Rock Accident

At about 5:52 pm on September 11, at the stop sign at the end of Key Rock Road at its intersection with Sugar Street, motorist James Dolan, 62, of Newtown, who was driving a 2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 van, struck the rear end of a 2014 Toyota RAV-4 SUV driven by Mary Lynn Larson, 57, of Sandy Hook, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Dolan for following too closely.

Hawleyville Crash

Police said motorist Kyle Ziegler, 19, of Meriden, who was driving a 1999 Ford Mustang on Hawleyville Road at about 5:44 pm on September 9, stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto an on-ramp at Interstate 84’s Exit 9 interchange.

Motorist Stephanie Wiederman, 33, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2014 Hyundai Tucson SUV, then struck the rear end of the Ford. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Wiederman for following too closely.

DUI Arrest

State police said they received some 911 calls reporting an erratically driven vehicle traveling eastward on Interstate 84 in the vicinity of Exit 7 at about 8:58 pm on September 8, so they responded to check the area. State police found the vehicle in question, which was speeding and weaving, on I-84 in Newtown.

State police charged motorist Alyssa Barnhart, 28, of Waterbury with driving under the influence, speeding, and failure to drive in the proper lane. After arrest processing, Barnhart was released on $1,500 non-surety bail for a September 25 court appearance.

This heavily damaged 1998 Volkswagen Jetta sedan, foreground, struck the rear end of a 2017 Nissan Rogue SUV, background, in a two-vehicle collision about 1:54 pm on September 18 on eastbound Interstate 84, just west of the Rochambeau Bridge. State police said motorist Richard Mastroianni, 68, of Woodbury, who was driving the Nissan, was approaching a slow-traffic area for a construction project, when the Nissan was struck from behind by the Volkswagen driven by Connor Smith, 22, of Cheshire. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene and checked both drivers who both refused medical treatment, state police said. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company responded.
