Putting Trash In Its Place

To the Editor:

Let’s give a cheer to (and help and support) the Lion’s Club and its campaign and hard work to clean up litter. Let’s face it, litter is ugly! And ugly is as ugly does...

Everywhere you go, there are trash containers available. Supermarkets, gas stations, convenience stores, schools, and churches, to name a few. Places we all go every day or so. Carry a bag or small box in your car until you get there.

Parents, educate your children; teachers, educate your students!

Can you imagine how much lower our taxes would be if we did not pay civil servants to clean up our major highways?

My area from Newtown High School to the center of Sandy Hook is a disgrace.

We had a family gathering in Rhode Island not long ago — Narragansett Bay area. The first thing I noticed: No litter. Along the River Walk was a discreet sign, which stated a fact: “Butts Are Litter.” That’s called civic pride. Its only demand, self respect and doing the right thing.

P.S. There is a law against littering and a fine. I have seen only one sign, in the Exit 14 commuter park lot.

Sincerely,

Margaret Walsh
