Radar Patrol

Police report they were using radar equipment to detect the speed of vehicles traveling on Berkshire Road, at about 11:30 am October 20, when they learned that motorist Michael Baker, 28, of Hamden was driving more than 60 miles per hour, which exceeds the posted speed limit in that area.

Police stopped Baker to investigate, after which they charged him with speeding and with driving with a suspended license.

After he posted $500 bail, police released Baker from custody for a November 3 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Speeding On Riverside

While on traffic patrol at about 11:46 am October 21, police stopped motorist Derek Cervone, 23, of 167 Riverside Road in the area near 45 Riverside Road because Cervone was driving 53 miles per hour in a posted 25 mph zone, police said.

Police said their investigation into the incident resulted in Cervone being charged with traveling too fast and with driving with a suspended license.

Police released Cervone on a written promise to appear in court on November 3.

Warrant Arrest

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Emily Donofrio, 21, of Ridgefield went to the police station on the morning of October 22, and was charged with failure to respond to an infraction stemming from an original charge of illegal possession of alcohol by a minor, police report.

Police had charged Donofrio with the alcohol offense last May 3 at a sobriety checkpoint they had held on Wasserman Way, but Donofrio did not respond to the $136 ticket which she received, so police obtained a warrant for her arrest.

When Donofrio received that violation last May, she was under age 21, according to police.

After she posted $136 bail, police released Donofrio for a November 5 court appearance.

Rear-End Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Flat Swamp Road at its intersection with Poverty Hollow Road about 7:45 am October 21.

In that incident, motorist Alicia Hutchins, 53, of 172 Currituck Road, who was driving a 2007 Infiniti FX-35, had stopped behind motorist Richard Cousens, 45, of Bethel, who was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius which was stopped at a stop sign, according to police.

The Infiniti then struck the rear end of the Toyota, police said. Police issued Hutchins an infraction for following too closely.

Evading Responsibility

Police are investigating an incident in which an unknown motorist, who was driving an unknown vehicle, struck an unoccupied 1996 Mercedes-Benz E-320, which was parked overnight on October 20–21 in the upper parking lot at Hot Shots Grille, Restaurant and Tap Room at 130 Mt Pleasant Road.

The Mercedes’ owner noticed damage to the right rear section of the vehicle on the morning of October 22 and called in police to investigate. Police ask anyone with information on the matter to contact Officer Andrew Stinson at the police station at 426-5841.

Vandalism

Someone sometime between a 1 and 8 am on October 18, damaged several curbside residential mailboxes, some picket fencing, and a front lawn on High Rock Road, according to police. The matter is under investigation and police ask anyone with information on the criminal mischief to contact officer John McCluskey at 426-5841, or at tip line 270-8888.

Bad Turn

Police report a two-car accident near 28 Church Hill Road about 2:30 pm October 19.

Motorist Natasha Kormanik, 23, of Lynchburg, Va., was driving a 1995 Acura Integra westward on Church Hill Road, as motorist Kayla Rustici, 19, of 54 Great Ring Road was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt eastward there.

The Acura then attempted to make a left turn into a driveway at 28 Church Hill Road, but in doing so the Acura turned into the path of the Chevrolet, resulting in a collision, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Kormanik a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

Dual Impact

During wet road conditions about 1:24 pm on October 24, motorist Stephen Edwards, 18, of 32 Bancroft Road was driving a 1998 Ford Taurus southward near 8 Walnut Tree Hill Road, police report.

At that time, motorist Hillary Lewis, 37, of 1 Patriot Ridge Road was driving a 2004 Honda Odyssey minivan northward, police added.

While negotiating a curve in the road, the Ford slid into the northbound lane, colliding with the Honda.

The Honda then went off the right road shoulder and struck a utility pole, according to police.

Both drivers refused medical treatment at the scene. Edwards received an infraction for failure to drive to the right on a curve.

Car vs Trees

Motorist James Archer, 53, of 60 Flat Swamp Road was driving a 2007 Honda Civic southward near 11 Flat Swamp Road about 4:44 pm October 25, when while negotiating a curve in the road to the left, he lost control of the auto and drove off the right road shoulder, striking two trees, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members transported Archer to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Dodgingtown firefighters responded to the incident. Police said the accident is under investigation.

DUI Charge

Police said they received a complaint about a motorist who was allegedly driving erratically on Route 25, so they went to the area to investigate on the morning of October 25.

Police said they stopped motorist Deborah Walsh, 48, for failure to drive to the right near 286 South Main Street (Route 25). Police listed alternate addresses for Walsh in Bridgeport and in Derby.

Walsh was charged with driving under the influence and with two counts of failure to drive to the right.

Police held Walsh on $250 bail for an October 26 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Truck Onto Lawn

Glen Rowland, 45, of 261 South Main Street was driving a 1989 Dodge pickup truck southward on Queen Street at about 6 pm October 20, when a mechanical failure caused the vehicle’s steering system to fail, resulting in the truck going out of control, veering to the left, crossing the northbound lane and coming to rest on the lawn at Newtown Middle School, police report. Rowland was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Sedan Vs Minivan

Police report a two-vehicle accident on South Main Street at its intersection with Mile Hill Road about 1 pm October 24.

In that incident, motorist Read Turner, 61, of Danbury, who was driving a 2001 Nissan Altima, drove into the rear end of a 2008 Honda Pilot driven by Wendy Suckow, 39, of 1 Old Gate Lane, police report.

Ambulance volunteers went to the scene in response to report of pain made by Suckow, police said. Police said they gave Turner an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Sandy Hook Damage

Police are investigating a motor vehicle accident which caused damage to some curbing at the intersection of Route 34 and Bradley Lane.

At about 1 pm on October 24, an unknown vehicle, which was heading eastward on Route 34, ran off the road at the intersection and damaged the curbing.

Police ask anyone with information on the driver’s identity to contact them at 426-5841.

Chevrolet Vs Chevrolet

At about 9 am October 25, motorist Victoria Brinkman, 52, of 32 Still Hill Road, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer westward on Church Hill Road, near Interstate 84, struck the rear of a stopped westbound 2008 Chevrolet Equinox being driven by Christine Sadlouskos, 40, of Monroe, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Brinkman for following too closely.

Too Fast

State police report that motorist Raymond Weller, 42, of Ansonia was driving a 1995 Chevrolet on the Exit 11 on-ramp of Interstate 84 about 11:26 am October 24, when Weller lost control of the vehicle and then struck a metal guardrail and a lightpost along the left road shoulder.

Weller was not injured. State police said that Weller was traveling too fast for conditions.

Asleep At Wheel

Motorist Lynn Deming, 72, of Redding, who was driving a 2001 Subaru Outback westward on Interstate 84, east of the Old Hawleyville Road overpass, fell asleep at the wheel and then drifted onto the right road shoulder at about 6:28 pm October 25, state police said.

Deming then awoke and overcorrected the steering, causing the vehicle to skid out of control, state police said. The Subaru then skidded across both westbound travel lanes and went onto the turf median where it struck some metal-beam guardrailing, according to state police.

Deming was not injured. State police verbally warned her for failure to drive in the established lane.

Larceny Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Jeanne Pasacreta, 52, of 34 Main Street went to the police station on the morning of October 27 and was charged with sixth-degree larceny in connection with an alleged incident of shoplifting earlier this year at Newtown Shopping Village at 6 Queen Street. Police released Pasacreta on a written promise to appear November 6 in Danbury Superior Court.

Youthful Offender

Police report they arrested a “youthful offender” on a court warrant on October 26, charging the person with breach of peace in connection with an incident that occurred on September 18 at Newtown High School.

Details on the nature of the incident were not available. Police processed the arrest and released the person on a written promise to appear November 2 in Danbury Youthful Offender Court.

Youthful offenders are people charged with crimes who are age 16 or age 17. Because the person is under 18, their identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Political Signs

Sometime late on October 22 or early on October 23, someone damaged political advertising signs that were positioned near the intersection of Great Ring Road and Erin Lane, police report.

Police ask anyone with information on who damaged the signs to contact them at 426-5841.

Rear-Ender

About 2 pm October 23, motorist Amanda Fishback, 26, of 15 Lake Road, who was driving a 2006 GMC Envoy SUV, was waiting on southbound South Main Street to turn left onto northern Peck’s Lane, when a southbound 2005 Chrysler Pacifica driven by Craig Rosen, 45, of New Fairfield drove into the rear end of the GMC, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said that Rosen had fallen asleep while driving, resulting in his being charged with reckless driving.

Knife Shown

Police report that at about noon on October 27, they charged a Newtown Middle School student with breach of peace because the student was in possession of a knife which the student had shown to multiple other students.

After arrest processing, police released the student on a written promise to appear November 9 in Danbury Juvenile Court. Because the youth is under age 18, their identity is shielded from disclosure by state law.

Burglary/Larceny

About 11:45 am on October 22, police said a burglary occurred at a home near the eastern end of Chestnut Hill Road, off Route 34.

In that incident, jewelry, personal papers, and some money was stolen, police said. The two suspects in the case entered the home via an unlocked door, according to police.

Police described the burglars as two white males, each about 19 years old. The men apparently drove to the scene in an older white Honda hatchback. 

One man was described as having a buzz-style haircut and wearing a white, hooded sweatshirt. The other man was described as having a thin beard and wearing a baseball with a large brim.

Police ask anyone with information about the crime to contact them at 426-5841.

NHS Theft

On the afternoon on October 27, police arrested a “youthful offender” on a warrant, charging the person with sixth-degree larceny in connection with a September 10 incident at Newtown High School. That charge involves the theft of items worth less than $250.

After processing, police released the person for a November 9 appearance in Danbury Youthful Offender Court. State law shields the identities of people under 18 who are charged with crimes.
