Records Set As Swim Team Competes In State Finals

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming and diving team, behind a pair of school record-setting performances, placed tenth in the Class LL state championship meet, at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven on March 11.

The Nighthawks had 211 points. Greenwich was first with 911 points.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay race, Newtown’s team of Colby Delia, Mason Suba, Xavier Williams, and Rick Irving was third with a team-record time of 1:28.44.

The 400 free relay of Irving, Suba, Williams, and Delia, was fifth in a record time of 3:16.26.

Newtown’s 200 yard medley relay of Michael Yu, Matt Irving, Jack Wojtowicz, and Sean McCleary was 19th in 1:57.29.

In the 200 free, Rick Irving and McCleary placed 18 and 23 with times of 1:49.00 and 1:52.02.

Delia came in fourth in the 50 free, sprinting to the finish in 21.01. Williams and Suba were 16th and 17th in the 50, clocking in at 23.20 and 22.85, competing in the event’s B and C finals, respectively.

Suba took 17th in the 100 butterfly, making his final touch in 54.00.

In the 100 free, Williams placed 11th in a time of 49.75; Delia was 15th in 50.01, and Irving came in 19th in 50.50.
