Reed Artwork Submitted For Weir Farm Exhibit 'Impressions Of Nature'

Artwork by three Reed Intermediate School students will be included in the May 2 to June 3 art exhibit at Weir Farm National Historic Site, 735 Nod Hill Road, Wilton. The exhibit opening coincides with the opening of the park for the season.nps.gov/wefa.facebook.com/WeirFarmNHS

According to Reed art teacher Michelle Ginand, she and art teacher Angela Choniski encouraged students to submit works for the art exhibit. Artwork by students Connor Sinapi, Lola Kessler, and Bree Hintze were chosen for the exhibit.

According to Weir Farm, the theme and title for the art exhibit is "Impressions of Nature." Along with Reed, other schools with students participating in the exhibit are Harborside Middle School, Columbus Magnet School, Rogers Park Middle School, Oxford High School, Branchville Elementary School, Central Elementary School, Ritter Elementary School, Lincoln Middle School, The Academy High School, Brien McMahon High School, Joel Barlow High School, Bethel High School, Mathewson School, Middlebrook School, Booth Hill School, Second Hill Lane Elementary School, Scotts Ridge Middle School, and The French American School.

Weir Farm National Historic Site is the only national park dedicated to American painting, according to a release for the exhibit. Artists have been drawn to Weir Farm for more than 135 years to create art inspired by nature.

Weir Farm National Historic Site opened for the season on May 2. The Visitor Center, Weir Studio, and Young Studio are open from 10 am to 4 pm, and guided tours of the Weir House are offered at 11 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, and 3 pm, Wednesday to Sunday. Free-to-use art supplies are available during visitor center hours, and programs such as art workshops, wellness programs, talks, guided walks, and special events will be offered throughout the season.

The art exhibit was completed in partnership with the International Fiber Collaborative. More than 60 works of art by students are included in the exhibit.

Vote No To The BOE Budget And No it Should Not Be Higher

Newtown schools have degraded over the 3+ decades I've lived here as the concentrated social experiment curricula driven by the state and small but loud groups. Yet we continue to dig into our pockets while we witness the downward spiral.

Unfortunately as voter turnout continues to decline the chances of it increasing also decline. The LC and BOF already know that the budget will be approved by virtue of the low turnout so why try to make smart decisions? The so-called referendum is essentially just a rubber stamp. They will continue to increase the budget by 2-5% every year because it's low enough to not cause a pushback under the cover of "inflation" and "maintaining the schools." Sending the budget to vote with 9% turnout is meaningless and a waste of resources on April 23rd.

I have seen Mr. Pisani repeatedly assert in the pages of the Bee that Newtown schools are "testing at a failing 64.9%". I'd be curious if he could elaborate on this statistic, as I have been unable to verify it independently. Which test exactly is our school system failing? How do our schools compare to other towns? How does our score compare to historical measures? It's very hard to draw conclusions from a single data point, so here are a few more data points to think about for context: Newtown is consistently ranked among the top 20 school districts in CT by the US News and World Report and Niche, which consider a range of performance metrics in their rankings; on average, Newtown students perform similar to, if not better than, students in neighboring school districts on standardized math and reading tests; the only data point on the CT Department of Education District Report Card where Newtown "fails" -- that is, falls behind the state average -- is access to art instruction. I'm glad the council member has acknowledged in this letter what taxpayers in high-performing (and high-spending) school districts like Darien, New Canaan, and Westport already know: "School funding does impact student achievement." Please keep that in mind when you vote this week!

All I Ask Is That You Think About It

An investment is done with a hope for a return. The operative term here is 'hope'.
