Robert Paul "Bob" Berkins, 65, of Southbury, died unexpectedly April 28, in his home. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on December 3, 1952, son of the late Paul Berkins and Jeanne (Bamford) Berkins.

He attended Newtown and Sandy Hook schools and was in the first graduating class (1971) of the current Newtown High School. He was a gifted athlete throughout high school, contributing to the football team's first undefeated season. He went on to play football at Graceland University, Idaho, and then continued his studies in Criminal Justice at Mattatuck Community College.

Mr Berkins was employed as a constable in Southbury until he had a life changing accident in 1980. His athletic abilities helped him manage life as a paraplegic for nearly 38 years. He went on to work at the Newtown Police Department, supporting the community for 30 years as records manager until his recent retirement.

His interests included his lifelong attraction to water and his love for Cape Cod in any season. In his earlier years, Mr Berkins could be found boating, fishing, lifeguarding, swimming, and surfing. In later years, he enjoyed trips to New York City for Broadway plays, fine dining, drives through the New England countryside, and enjoyable times spent with family and friends. He was quick witted, enjoyed practical jokes, and telling entertaining stories that brought much laughter. Mr Berkins' loved ones say he has touched many lives; was an inspiration during his independent life, despite all that he endured; and will be greatly missed.

His sister, Dianne Hughes and her husband, Peter, of Guilford; two nephews, a niece, a great-niece, and many longtime friends and colleagues survive him.

There will be no calling hours.
