Salvatore J. Scosta, 90, of Sandy Hook, died November 10, with his loving family by his side. Born April 9, 1928, in Chelsea, Mass., he was the son of the late Joseph and “Ida” (Recupero) Scosta of Stratford.

His devoted wife of 54 years, Irene; his children and their spouses, David and Vicky Scosta of Brookfield, Michael and Sarah Scosta of Southbury, and Julie Scosta of Greenwich; his grandchildren, Christopher Scosta and wife, Kate, Jason Scosta and fiancée, Stacy, and Anthony and Natalie Scosta, survive him.

A resident of Sandy Hook for 54 years, he was employed by Sikorsky Aircraft for more than 40 years, working in the Development Manufacturing Center. He worked on the UH-60 Black Hawk and spent time in California with NASA on the RSRA/X-wing.

Mr Scosta was the umpire in chief for Newtown Little League for many years and was presented with an honorary award in recognition of the honorable and professional manner in which he performed his duties. He was affectionately known by the LL players as “Sal,” and he made them feel like they played in the big leagues.

A diehard Red Sox and Giants fan, sports were his passion. He enjoyed attending the numerous sporting events of his grandchildren. He was active in the Sikorsky retirement club and served as vice president. He enjoyed building model ships. He also created numerous ink drawings, which he gave as gifts.

He will be sadly missed by his family and the many lives he touched.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, November 16, at 12:30 pm, in St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery.
