Samantha Bernstein

Samantha L. Bernstein, the daughter of Kenneth and Laura Lerman, has been awarded a BSN from Simmons College in Boston, Mass., graduating cum laude.

A Dix Scholar at Simmons College, Mrs Bernstein was also president of the Nursing Liaison. She was awarded the Margery Stimson Award for excellence in academic achievement in nursing, the only undergraduate nursing award given by Simmons College. Mrs Berstein was also elected to membership in Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. She is an RN on the staff at Norwalk Hospital.

Lindsey M. Korotash of Newtown was named to the dean’s list at Bates College as a result of her scholastic standing during the second semester of the 2000-01 academic year. She is a sophomore psychology major and the daughter of Mark and Lynda Korotash. Miss Korotash is a member of the women’s rugby club and the lacrosse team. She is a 1999 graduate of Newtown High School.

Kevin Rice

Laura Hammond of Newtown has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at Northwestern University. She is a 2000 graduate of Newtown High School.

The following students from the local area have been accepted into the Class of 2005 at Springfield College in Western Massachusetts and will participate in a four-day orientation before beginning classes on August 26, 2001: Jonathan Werbeck of Newtown, Emily Simoneau of Sandy Hook, and Kerin Sovern of Sandy Hook will join 575 first-year classmates from 24 states who were chosen from among more than 2,400 applicants.

Local students Jessica Clark and Michelle Gross of Newtown have been inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta honor society at Bucknell University. Alpha Lambda Delta is a national scholarship honor society for first-year college students.

Miss Clark, daughter of Patricia and William Clark of Newtown, is a first-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences and is a dean’s list student at Bucknell.

Miss Gross, daughter of Patricia Ratcliffe of Newtown and Michael Gross of Fort Myers, Fla., is a first-year student in the College of Arts and Sciences and is a dean’s list student at Bucknell.

Stacy Dunn of Newtown was named to the dean’s list at Teikyo Post University for the spring 2001 semester.

Kevin Rice, son of Kevin and Laura Rice of Newtown, received his bachelor of arts degree in biology from Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. During the summers of his sophomore and junior years at Lafayette he worked as an intern/research assistant at Loyola-Stritch Medical Center in Chicago, Ill. In August he will be attending Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C., to pursue his degree in medicine. Mr Rice is a 1997 graduate of Newtown High School.

Bonnie Robinson

Bonnie Robinson of Newtown received a $5,000 scholarship from RMHC/HACER (Ronald McDonald House Charities/Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources). The RMHC/HACER program awarded $300,000 in scholarships. Monroe McDonald’s Restaurant owner/operator David Hawthorne presented Miss Robinson with the check. She will begin her first year at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, this fall, where she plans to pursue a degree in music and will be a member of the marching band.

Jessica Borchetta

Jessica A. Borchetta, daughter of Wendy and Charles Borchetta of Newtown, has enrolled for fall 2001 admission at Rochester Institute of Technology. Miss Borchetta, recipient of an RIT Grant, will major in professional photographic illustration in RIT’s School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. She is a June 2001 Westover School graduate.
