Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company will continue its 80th anniversary year with three special events this season.

Ahead of Fire Prevention Week 2018 (which will be observed October 7-13), the company will host an Open House & Public Safety Day on Sunday, September 23, from 11 am until 2 pm. Events will be set up in the firehouse and parking lots of the company’s main station, 18-20 Riverside Road.

Those planning to attend will be asked to park at Newtown Senior Center, 14 Riverside Road.

Firefighters will have displays from previous training sessions, offer tours of the station, demonstrate and then let guests use a thermal imaging camera, answer questions about smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and answer questions about the different types of membership within the fire and rescue company.

There will also be demonstrations of a tanker truck dumping into a portable pond and a pumper pulling water out of the temporary water source. Children will be invited to cut soda cans in half using a cutter that will also be used by firefighters during a car extrication demonstration. Jaws of Life cutting and spreading tools will be used to demonstrate how people in a motor vehicle accident are extricated from the vehicle.

Attendees will also be invited to try on turnout gear, use a fire extinguisher simulator, operate a hose line, and learn about the different types of SHVFR members. Applications will be available for those who are interested in joining.

In addition, representatives from Eversource will be on hand with information about electrical and national gas hazards and emergencies; Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps will have one of its vehicles on display, and members will offer free blood pressure screenings; and Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue members will display some of their equipment and provide information about their organization.

Specialized equipment for wildland fires will be displayed by CT Department of Energy & Environmental Protection. Newtown Emergency Management will have information on preparing for storms and about Newtown’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Guests will learn how to sign up for emergency notifications through the town’s CodeRED system. Connecticut Freemasons will be on hand with their Child Identification Program. Smokey Bear will be visiting, as will local law enforcement personnel.

One lucky family will win a fire truck ride for their child to school. A door prize will also be awarded.

Admission is free, and refreshments will be served (also free of charge). For information, call 203-270-4392 or visit sandyhookfire.com.

Golf Tournament

The 31st Annual Sandy Hook VFR Golf Tournament will be Monday, October 1, at The Golf Club at Oxford Greens.

Final registration and sign-in will begin at 7:30 that morning. Putting practice will begin and a driving range will also open at that time. Continental breakfast will be served at 8:30, and play will commence with a siren start at 9 am.

Lunch will be available along the course, and late lunch will be served at 3, when winners are also announced.

There are prizes for players who get a hole in one, closest to the pin, closest to the line, and longest drive. First and second place trophies will be awarded to the two top foursomes. Another foursome will also go home with a Duffer Award.

Cost is $150 per person, or $50 for dinner only. Golfers are welcome to register as a foursome or on their own to be matched with other players.

Full details and player applications are available at the fire company’s website. Additional information is available by calling the firehouse (203-270-4392) or sending an e-mail to sandyhookgolf@gmail.com.

Sponsor opportunities are also available. Call or e-mail through the abovementioned contacts for that information.

Proceeds from this event benefit the fire company.

Paper Shredding Event

The SHVFR Ladies Auxiliary will host a paper shredding event Saturday, October 13, also at the main station.

From 9 am until noon, the public is invited to bring boxes of papers that need to be shredded to the station, where it will be shredded on site by a professional company.

Cost is $10 per box or paper bag, with proceeds to benefit the auxiliary.
