Scholarships Available

The Newtown High School Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships , typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application.

The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises parents and students to check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbb.org or 703-276-0100.

Bennington College Young Writers Award Competition — Bennington College sponsors the Young Writers Awards to recognize outstanding writing achievement by high school students across the country. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to submit one of the following: poetry, fiction story/play or nonfiction essay. All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teacher. Application details and the submission form are available online under the News heading at www.bennington.edu. The deadline for entries is November 1.

Emory University Scholars Program — Emory Scholar awards span four years of undergraduate study and range from partial to full-tuition scholarships. NHS may nominate up to four outstanding seniors for Emory Scholars and one senior for Goizueta Scholars. The Scholars Program nomination form and the student’s complete application for admission must be submitted online or postmarked by November 15. It is preferred that submission be done online via the Common Application in Naviance. In January, the scholar selection committee will select approximately 370 semifinalists and these semifinalists will learn of their admission to Emory at that time. From that pool, approximately 70 finalists will interview at Emory. Attendance at these interviews is required and travel expenses will be covered. Scholarship selection is based entirely upon a student’s merit; financial need is not considered.

Jefferson Scholars Scholarships — NHS is eligible to nominate one exceptionally talented senior for the Jefferson Scholars Program at the University of Virginia. The award is a renewable, full four-year scholarship. This national program should be a target for students who best represent excellence in the areas of leadership, scholarship, and citizenship. Information is available on the Jefferson Scholar Foundation website, www.jeffersonscholars.org. Applying for admission is highly encouraged but not required of nominees. Students applying early decision to another school should not apply for this scholarship. Guidance counselor involvement is required for nomination. If you are interested in being nominated, see Mrs Latowicki in the Career Center by October 11. The nomination form must be completed electronically by November 1.
