State police report a motor vehicle accident that involved six SUVs colliding on eastbound Interstate 84 on the evening of Friday, June 7.

Fifteen people overall were involved in the 6:46 pm collision. One male driver and his female passenger, both from Sandy Hook, were transported to the hospital for possible injuries, as were one male driver from Wappingers Falls, N.Y., and one female driver from Watertown. The other 11 people were not injured, according to state police.

State police report that on eastbound I-84, about 250 feet east of the Exit 10 on-ramp, a 2013 Mazda CX-9 SUV made an abrupt lane change in a three-lane area, resulting in it colliding with a 2015 Subaru Forester SUV. The Mazda was then pushed into the right side of a 2013 Lincoln Navigator, state police said.

The Subaru kept traveling and then sideswiped a 2019 Audi Q-5 SUV. The Subaru then struck a 2015 Cadillac SRX SUV, pushing that vehicle into a 2009 Cadillac SRX SUV, state police said.

The six vehicles came to rest on the highway’s grassy median and in the left travel lane. Five of the six vehicles needed to be towed away due to heavy damage.

Roberta Pereira-Rocharibeiro, 45, of Danbury, who was driving the Mazda, received an infraction for making an unsafe lane change, according to state police.

Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company Second Assistant Chief Andy Ryan was the company’s incident commander at the accident.

The extensive wreckage resulted in a good deal of automotive fluids being spilled from damaged vehicles, he said. Firefighters isolated that spillage with absorbent chemicals.

The vehicular wreckage resulted in the eastbound side of the highway being reduced to one travel lane while emergency service crews worked at the scene for more than an hour, Mr Ryan said.

The four people who were transported to Danbury Hospital via three Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps ambulances had apparently relatively minor injuries, he added.

A dozen Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters went to the incident. The accident occurred while the fire company’s annual LobsterFest was underway at its Riverside Road firehouse.
